Geeky Kit raids: Man arrested, council says selling free TV streaming boxes is illegal
Electronics firm Geeky Kit has apologised after its shops were closed following raids by police and trading standards.

The raids on stores at the Dundas Shopping Arcade, in Middlesbrough town centre, and its sister store in Mill Lane, Billingham, took place yesterday morning.

The company sells electronics items including free TV streaming boxes.

Officers were seen bagging up electrical goods at both shops yesterday.

A statement on Geeky Kit’s Facebook page says: “Hello all, please bear with us for a short while and thank you for your patience.

"The shops will not be open tomorrow (Tuesday).

“We do not control the content that is accessible on the internet via the product that we sell.

"We are currently working with Trading Standards to ensure that we can sell our products whilst adhering to UK copyright laws.

"More news will be available tomorrow.”

An earlier statement on the page said: “Due to unforeseen circumstances we are currently unable to offer support at the moment, we hope to resolve the situation soon.

"Sorry for any inconvenience caused. Boxes will continue to function”.

An eyewitness in the Dundas Shopping Arcade, who did not want to be named, said: “There were three police officers overseeing as Trading Standards officers bagged up electrical equipment.”

People took to social media yesterday to comment on the raids.

The Gazette is still awaiting comment from Stockton Council’s trading standards team, which is understood to have led the raids.
