FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – Where Tim Tebow goes, something of a circus-like atmosphere typically follows the enigmatic quarterback. When the newly acquired Jet met the local media for the first time Monday afternoon, the circus came to the Jets Training Center.

Monday in Florham Park was unlike anything seen around this franchise since Brett Favre rode into town in 2008.

Over 200 credentialed media members descended on a press conference that was expected to be so large that it was moved into the field house at the training center. An estimated 80 chairs were set up, which made for standing room only, in addition to 11 satellite trucks outside and approximately 40 video cameras set up on a platform inside.

Once Tebow took the podium by himself at just past noon, it was 32 minutes of wide smiles and positive messages. He talked about how excited he was to be a Jet and his strong relationship with starting quarterback Mark Sanchez and the coaching staff, while sidestepping anything controversial, including his Christian faith.

If Tebow is going to have problems with the New York media, it wasn't apparent on Day 1.

"I'm so excited about being a Jet, thank you all for coming," Tebow said. "I'm so honored and humbled to be a Jet. I'm so thankful that they wanted me. I'm looking forward to my time as a Jet and I'm very, very excited."

The former Heisman Trophy winner led the Broncos to the divisional round of the AFC playoffs last season, before Peyton Manning arrived in Denver earlier this month. The Jets last week traded for the right to have Tebow come in as Sanchez's backup.

At the NFL owners meetings in Palm Beach, Fla., on Sunday, head coach Rex Ryan indicated Tebow could be used in as many as 20 plays per game. The assembled tri-state area media Monday dove right in on his relationship with Sanchez.

"I think the exciting thing is that me and Mark have a great relationship," Tebow said. "We've had a great relationship for the last three years I think. We've been friends, we text back and forth, we've talked already and we have a great relationship and a great working relationship."

While Tebow may have been nervous to start Monday's press conference, he settled in and answered every last question with the calmness and savvy of a veteran beyond his age and a confidence that he will not just be holding a clipboard on the sideline.

With victories in seven of his first eight starts last season and a playoff victory on his resume, the 6-foot-3, 235-pound southpaw will go into training camp ready to compete for snaps, whether it's at quarterback or any other position on the field.

"However I can help the team, however I can make a difference, however they can use me, I'll be open to it and work as hard as I can every time I step on the field," Tebow said. "I will give my whole heart and soul to being the best Jet I can possibly be in trying to help this team win football games."

WOW ! Did you see the Tebow circus? He got a reception and media coverage equal to Manning !
Which ''back up'' QB ever got that type of media coverage ?

I don't know about you ,,, but it seems like someone is really trying to piss off Sanchez

Sanchez is not as colorful as Tebow. And besides I think Sanchez's days are numbered with the Jets.

Yes they are both very marketable QBs But NY Jet (or really NJ Jet) fans like a colorful QB. Being from there and remembering watching Joe Namath in the original Shea Stadium I know that is what the fan base likes.

of coarse one has to go ... NY just signed Sanchez to a 3 year extention ..
Sanchez's new contract, which includes $20.5 million in guarantees, provides
financial security for two seasons. The Jets would've still done the deal
if they thought Tebow was thier man.

If Tebow stays in NY ,, the whole "Tebowing" thing will be such a distraction..
I can't see how Sanchez can funtion

sooooo,,, Tebow must be a pod on NY's board ,, watch him get traded for
a player or two ,, could be before the start of the season

or scratch that .... LOL
they want him to take 20 snaps per game ..
should make for some interesting football ,,

Jets QBs Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow said repeatedly Monday that they are looking forward to playing together. Given they're both likely to get significant snaps, that's a good thing.

And it aligns with the message HC Rex Ryan will doubtless be preaching to a team he admits had frayed by the end of its disappointing 8-8 2011 season.

"You don't focus on one individual," Ryan said Tuesday at the NFL's owners meetings. "That's not what's in the best interest of the team. I see quarterback as being a different (position), but there are three factors when making any decision: team, team and team."

Ryan has said Tebow could get up to 20 snaps a game, most likely coming in the Wildcat formation Ryan and new OC Tony Sparano like to mix in. But could that lead to more playing time for the polarizing lefty?
"Competition is good. I think you play better with competition," Ryan said. "But I don't think Mark cares who is behind him. Mark, in his mind, he will be the guy.

"Mark is a lot more confident than people give him credit for. It's not like Mark doesn't have an outstanding resume as a starter."

That includes a 27-20 ledger in the regular season and a 4-2 record in the playoffs with all of Sanchez's postseason starts coming on the road.

"I mean, he's here to help us and I'm confident in my abilities. I know the team feels the same way about me. They have belief in me," Sanchez said Monday.

"I'm not worried about losing my spot."

But Tebow also notched a playoff victory last season, throwing an 80-yard game-winning TD in OT to beat the Steelers, a play that only added to his legend.

"I could say he is one of 53 guys. He's not, he has a great following," Ryan said of his new "backup."

"For us, I am worried about football. We feel Tim brings something to our football team that will add to our team. He's not just a backup player."

I think it is a great signing. Whichever team Tebow is on, his team wins. Jets are in need of wins.

I believe with adequate training and repetition, Tebow will be an adequate passer.

terisagirl....you are soooooo right...all this media coverage for a backup QB. Just think of all the media coverage he`ll get when he finally loses "IT" to one (or more) of the babes of the Big Apple.
