NOWITZKI PACES MAVS OVER KINGS IN SACRAMENTO

THE SPORTS NETWORK

Sacramento, CA (Sports Network) - Dirk Nowitzki had 25 points and seven rebounds, and the Dallas Mavericks defeated the Sacramento Kings, 99-91, at Arco Arena.

Jose Barea added 17 points for the Mavs, who have won three of four. Josh Howard finished with 16 points, and Jason Kidd had 14 points and seven assists for Dallas. Jason Terry contributed 11 points and five assists in the victory.

"We have a pretty experienced team," Nowitzki said. "We didn't want to give them transition baskets. We did a decent job with that and I think our defense has been pretty good all year.

Omri Casspi had 22 points and a career-best 11 rebounds for the Kings, who have lost three in a row and five of six. Jason Thompson recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Tyreke Evans returned from a three-game absence to score 14 points and dish out six assists in a losing effort.

Sacramento led by two, 27-25, after the first quarter, but Dallas went on a 13-0 run in the second to take control.

The burst started with the Mavs trailing, 31-29, but in three minutes the visitors grabbed an 11-point lead -- finished by a layup from Barea midway through the quarter.

The Kings recovered a bit and trailed only 55-48 at halftime.

Dallas stormed out to start the third quarter, scoring the first six points for a 13-point advantage. Sacramento never strung together more than four consecutive points in the period and faced a 77-67 deficit entering the fourth.

The Kings got to within eight a couple times early in the final quarter, but Barea's basket with just over seven minutes to go put Dallas in front, 85-73.

The Mavs were not threatened down the stretch, despite an 11-0 run by the Kings late that pulled them to within six with 30.1 ticks left.

"We have to learn to play with fatigue, we have to learn to play against good teams. It's all part of the journey," Kings head coach Paul Westphal said.
