Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada (AHN) - British Columbia and Saskatchewan have joined the growing list of Canadian provinces that ban using cellphones while driving.
Driving while using mobile devices are prohibited in both provinces beginning Friday. BC and Saskatchewan still allow motorists to use their mobile phones if they use hands-free devices. New drivers are prohibited from using mobile devices while driving.
The two provinces followed other Canadian provinces' example that heeded the Insurance Bureau of Canada's warning that drivers who text while driving have 23 times more chanceof being involved in an accident. Motorists sending short messages or talking on their mobile phones are 10 times more likely to go through a red light.
BC gave residents a month to get used to the ban. By Feb. 1, violators of the ban will be fined $167. Motorists caught texting or emailing while behind the wheel would be slapped three penalty points.
Saskatchewan's punishment for the same violations are a penalty of $280 and four demerit points.
