Diamond Dallas Page was recently interviewed by Sports Town Chicago, discussing a number of topics, including his desire to be inducted into the 2013 WWE Hall of Fame. A recap from the interview can be found here.
I think Page would make a great fit into the WWE Hall of Fame, and certainly think he's deserving of the honor. Getting inducted next year, when WrestleMania 29 takes place in New Jersey, would be a perfect fit for Page, a Jersey native.
Page who was originally a manager for the Fabulous Freebirds in WCW, made a dramatic rise to prominence, by climbing through the ranks and becoming one of the most popular wrestlers of the 1990's.
For those of us that watched Monday Nitro every week, we witnessed first hand, Page's rise from a lowly mid card talent, to Main Event Superstar. Page's most legendary feud, and arguably his greatest matches, took place against the late great "Macho Man" Randy Savage.
DDP and Savage had a tremendous trilogy of matches on PPV back in 1997 that is definitely worth checking out if you get the chance.
The feud, the promos, the matches, all help establish Page as a major player in WCW, and this was at a time when WCW was loaded with big-name talent.
The matches against Savage were great, and cemented his legacy as a great in-ring performer, but it wasn't until the summer of 1998 that Page broke out into the mainstream.
WCW Bash at the Beach that year, featured Page teaming up with NBA great Karl Malone, to take on the team of "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan, and NBA bad boy Dennis Rodman. The match got a great deal of attention across mainstream news outlets, but Page wasn't done yet.....
The very next month, WCW presented a Pay Per View event known as Road Wild. The main event featured, DDP teaming with Tonight Show host Jay Leno, as they did battle against "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff.
The biggest promotion of this match, took place on The Tonight Show on the NBC network. With WCW's high ratings at the time, combined with the huge audience Jay Leno has, DDP had definitely hit the big time.
In 1999, Page went on to win the WCW World Title. Unfortunately, WCW was going through a lot of turmoil around that time, and nagging injuries were catching up with DDP, so his reign as champ, was not as memorable as he would have hoped.
When WCW was sold to World Wrestling Entertainment, back in 2001, Page was one of only a very few wrestlers who signed with WWE, instead of sitting home and collecting guaranteed contract money. It was Page's desire to perform that motivated that decision.
Again, though, it was nagging injuries that prevented Page from having a meaningful run with the company, and eventually led to hid departure in 2002.
These days, Page keeps busy with "DDP Yoga," which has also become a favorite among many of his friends inside the wrestling business.
When I think of DDP, I think of a guy who worked hard, defied the odds and became a big star during the most popular era in wrestling history.
If Page is inducted into next year's WWE Hall of Fame, I think there is only one way he should end his induction speech, and that is the same way his career in WCW took off, with a BAAAAANG!
