'Poo-powered Wi-Fi' encourages dog owners to stoop & scoop

A Mexican Internet company has found a new way to reward conscientious dog owners for picking up after their pooches: with a free wireless Internet signal.

Already installed at 10 parks across Mexico City, "Poo Wifi" works by prompting dog owners toss their pet's waste into a special receptacle. A device inside the receptacle calculates the weight of the package and provides everybody in the park with a corresponding number of free WiFi minutes.

The more poop in the bin, the more minutes added to the clock for everyone to share.

Usually, one small package provides the park with at least a few minutes. Certainly enough to send an email or listen to a song.

"In an age when people are probably more interested in staring at their smartphone than watching what their dog is doing, it's a smart idea," writes creativity-online after speaking to BBDO Mexico, who devised the campaign.

The agency responsible for the program notes that while people may abuse the bins by tossing trash into them for WiFi, any action to keep the streets clean is a positive one.
