Although many people have their favourites and things change with time but here is what I would look for, Intel core i5 (second generation), 6 Gigs of ram (4 Gigs min), 500 - 600 Gig Hard drive and minimum two usb 2.0 ports ( a usb 3.0 would be nice to have) HDMI out and 6 cell battery(more cells would be but it adds weight), 15.4 inch screen (you decide if you want to carry it around a lot, get a 14" otherwise 15.4" is fine) Nokia's 17" is not meant to be moved too much. The looks depends on what appeals to you , as far as brands are concerned, I would get Sony, Toshiba or Samsung. Too many problems with HP and I guess Acer would be my second choice (for the sake of price). Do not need to get setup or extended warranties from stores like Best buy or Futureshop (I used to work for them a while back).

,
I agree with that one. The only thing worst than an HP laptop, is their customer service!!! lol
