SMITH'S FTS IN FINAL SECOND GIVE NUGGETS WIN OVER WARRIORS

THE SPORTS NETWORK

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - J.R. Smith made 2-of-3 free throws with 0.4 seconds on the clock after being fouled on a desperation shot, and the Denver Nuggets won a back-and-forth game with Golden State, 123-122, at Pepsi Center.

Smith finished with 21 points for the Nuggets, who had lost six of their last eight games. They played without Chauncey Billups (groin) and Carmelo Anthony (knee). Kenyon Martin led the team with 27 points and 13 rebounds, while Ty Lawson contributed with 21 points and eight assists in the win.

Joey Graham scored 20, while Arron Afflalo recorded 10 points, while Nene had nine points and 12 boards for Denver.

Corey Maggette scored 35 points and grabbed seven boards for the Warriors, who have lost five straight in Denver. Monta Ellis finished with 32 points and six assists, while Stephen Curry went 10-of-13 from the field -- including 6-of-6 from three-point range -- for 26 points to go with six assists and five rebounds in defeat.

Anthony Randolph provided 11 points for Golden State, which fell to 3-17 on the road. It was the Warriors' eighth consecutive loss outside Oakland.

Denver started the fourth with a two-point lead, but quickly expanded its advantage.

A Smith jumper two minutes in put the Nuggets ahead, 102-98, and he added another jump shot from 19 feet away with 7 1/2 minutes left for a 109-102 advantage.

The Warriors followed with an 11-0 run to surge in front. Maggette made a pair of free throws to start the run, Curry drilled a three to put Golden State in front and Maggette converted a layup try with four minutes left for a 113-109 advantage.

Denver faced a five-point deficit with just under two minutes left, but an ensuing 6-0 run put the Nuggets back in the lead, 121-120, on a Martin jumper with 24.6 seconds left.

Ellis answered for Golden State by banking in a layup with 15.2 ticks left to put the visitors back in front; Graham missed a three-pointer on the next Denver possession, but the Nuggets got the ball back with 1.4 seconds left following a jump ball.

Smith attempted a desperation three from near half-court, but Ellis inexplicably fouled him with 0.4 seconds on the clock. Smith then drilled the first two free throws for a 123-122 lead and missed the third. Golden State grabbed the rebound and called timeout with 0.1 seconds on the clock, but the Warriors couldn't get a shot off on their final possession.

Golden State held a 30-28 lead after a tightly-contested first quarter, and an 8-0 run midway through the second put the Warriors ahead, 54-46, after a Randolph free throw.

Denver, though, responded with an 13-0 burst, as Lawson had five points and an assist during the stretch to give the Nuggets a five-point lead. The hosts led 65-62 at halftime.

The Nuggets put together a 9-0 run early in the third to extend their lead to 10, but the Warriors quickly erased that advantage with a 10-0 run that tied the game, 76-76, on an Ellis layup.

The rest of the quarter remained within a four-point margin, and Denver carried a 98-96 lead heading to the fourth.
