May 1st, 2012 http://www.boxingnews24.com/wp-content/uploads/floyd455.jpgBy Dan Ambrose: Undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26 KO’s) could haul in a cool $40 million for an easy night’s work against WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (37-2, 30 KO’s) on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Although some boxing fans think WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao is the sports’ cash cow, it’s clearly not the case. Mayweather makes more money because he’s self promoted, so nets bigger cash with every fight. Additionally, Mayweather has been bringing in bigger numbers for the most part compared to his Filipino counterpart. It’s going to be interesting to see if Cotto can push Mayweather and give him problems on Saturday. Cotto figures that he’s Mayweather’s best opponent he’s ever faced, but I’m not so sure about that. Mayweather has been with some quality fighters over the years, and even a past his best Oscar De La Hoya is likely a better opponent than Cotto.
Cotto really only has five or six rounds to try and win this fight, because once the fight goes into the second half of the bout, Cotto’s skin will start to swell and tear, and he’ll run out of gas. Cotto is a good six-right fighter when taking on quality opposition, but beyond that and he’s very beatable. Mayweather won’t tire out, and he won’t cut up. Once the fight is in the second half, Mayweather will turn it up a notch and we’ll see Cotto struggle.
Cotto was blasted out by Antonio Margarito in 2008 and on the verge of being stopped by Joshua Clottey in 2009. Clottey would have stopped Cotto if he had kept throwing punches instead of fighting with his back against the ropes in the last four rounds of the fight. Cotto looked beaten 8th, but Clottey went into the sparring partner mode and just covered up the rest of the way. Pacquiao stopped Cotto in 2009.
Mayweather stands to make a ton of money of the Cotto fight brings in PPV numbers over 1.4 million buys. It’ll likely bring in those kinds of numbers, but I’m no so certain it will get much more than that because the fight is seen as a mismatch by boxing fans. When you have a mismatch going in the door, boxing fans tend to stay away in large numbers. The thing is the fight would be much bigger if Cotto’s old promoter Bob Arum had been matching Cotto against the top fighters in the division in the last couple of years, guys like Erislandy Lara, James Kirkland and Vanes Martirosyan instead of Ricardo Mayorga, Yuri Foreman and Antonio Margarito.

First of all, my friend Todd started the thread!

Secondly, I am sick and tired of "so-called pseudo-professionals" rendering opinions based on nothing but their highly protracted prejudiced and unsubstantiated perspectives - like Dan Ambrose.

Simply concluding that Mayweather makes more money because he’s self promoted shows an amateurish disregard of fiscal, business, and economic realities. It is completely idiotic, if not utterly ignorant. It is like saying, "I am going fishing on my own boat without a guide and I will catch the biggest fish!" The sport of boxing outside the ring is just like any other business. It has levels of risks and rewards greater than certain ordinary businesses. Expenses are enormous. Marketing, advertising, and promotional expenses could be in hundreds and millions of dollars. It is impudent to underestimate the contingencies of such a "high-risk" venture and state categorically that "this bout is manna from heaven" that will make Mayweather a very rich man. He fails to present a true fact: that Mayweather, as his own promoter, is the last man to be paid - after Cotto, Golden Boy, the referee, the judges, the security men, and Michael Buffer, whose fee is more than $200,000 for the night - and the IRS!

Never mind the hoopla as to who will win or lose and why. Any wrong estimate of expenses and revenues could put Mayweather in the hole - but not Miguel Cotto!

Forget about his diatribe against Arum, Clottey, or about what Cotto has been able to accomplished - or not! Forget about 24/7!

The paying public is fickle. If the public believe that they have had enough of Mayweather's arrogance, ego, and crass demeanor, he could end up on the short end of the carrot stick. One question: Why do you think that the announcement concerning PPV on his Ortiz fight were not trumpeted after the fight? Why did it take months to disclose them hush-hush? Why is it that he was not bragging that he MADE millions? Maybe because the truth hurts.

ENOUGH OF DAN AMBROSE!

10 Reasons NOT to pay for this weekend Mayweather-Cotto fight
1. It is too expensive

2. It is not the fight we wanted to see. Not buying it will send a message to the promoters that we are tired and sick of tune up fights.

3. It will be another boring Mayweather fight. He never fights toe to toe and he is overly defensive or runs away a lot.

4. Mayweather will win by decision even if he ends up in bad shape than his opponent because the boxing promoters would lose a lot of money in his future fights if they allowed him to lose

5. Floyd himself said in HBO's 24/7 that "he’s flashy, he talk a lot of trash, he’s wild, he’s all over the place, he gets nice cars, all he is is money, money, money". Giving more money to him will make his behavior worse.

6. In 24/7 he tries to look nice by giving back to the community and saying that he likes some nationalities, but he said something bad to Asians and the PETA people in the recent past.

7. He has to pay back for humiliating and ridiculing the fans in his last fight with Ortiz

8. The Motocross finals is sold out in Vegas on the same day and it is also shown live on TV

9. There are places that show the fight and you pay only to the owner of the place where you watch the fight

10. The fight will always be shown on HBO for free a week later

APOLOGIES TO ROKKO...(he was first to put his list)

10 reasons to boycott Saturday’s Fight:
10. Coverage of LPGA tournament/reruns is more exciting
9. The Los Angeles Kings may be disposing St. Louis on their way to the Stanley Cup that night
8. If you want to watch a runner, go see Usain Bolt of Jamaica
7. Joshua Clottey blames Baku Okra for his loss against Pacquiao. At least it is better than the sucker punch Victor Ortiz had to swallow. Besides, sucker punch, orange-banana punch, fruit punch – doesn’t matter. At 7/11 that only cost $1.99!
6. Take the girlfriend out instead. See Jason Statham in Safe. If you want action and entertainment, popcorn, coke. It will set you back $100 for the night…but think of the side benefits at the end of the evening! ;)
5. I hear there is a rerun of Mike Tyson munching on Evander Holyfield’s ear that night.
4. At about that time, David Haye(maker) would be making a confession as to what really happened to his toe during his demolition by Wladimir. Now you don’t want to miss that, will ya?
3. If the only reason why you would shell out $69.95 is to see Shantel Jackson, (see above) PM me. I will tell you where to get her latest….ahem….video.
2. No matter how much the PPV numbers, Judge Melissa Saragosa is not changing her mind about Mayweather going to jail on June 1.
Lastly, the number one reason to boycott Saturday Night’s fight:
1. A special is running on Channel 492 featuring Michelle Wie. Or is it Natalie Gulbis? No, it is Maria Sharapova! Or is it Cooking with Wok? Maybe a rerun of Gilligan’s Island. Either one would be more exciting. You would be hard pressed to miss them.

So, who is NSAC? It is the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Unsuspecting readers would quickly assume that "NSAC" is paying Mayweather's guarantee. Media laps it up and it spreads like wild fire. (It is here now!)

Why did they come out with this "press release"? Because they have fiduciary interest. The higher the gate and PPV, the bigger their take. Thus, it is a "final push" for a bigger revenue. Are they telling the truth or is this hype? Hype is the type of statement that does not offer supporting facts on a salivating pronouncement.

Chris Manning of S1.com writes for Inside Boxing. Here is his "closer to the truth" report:

"Mayweather's business model is unusual, but simple: He bets on himself. Mayweather assumes all the up-front risk, guaranteeing the money required for the promotion, which after publicity, advertising, legal fees and insurance reaches around $10 million. In return, Mayweather controls every revenue stream, including foreign sales, site revenue and closed-circuit revenue. The money, minus what goes to the distributors and network, goes to him. Whereas other fighters take guarantees up front, Mayweather cleans up on the back end."

Cotto's paycheck is guaranteed. He knows he will get that for sure. Miguel Cotto is not a gambler and he takes home $8 million or more no matter what.

Sure, Mayweather "could make" $32 million or more" but that would depend on books of accounts that calculate Income less Debts and Liabilities and Taxes." If Mayweather writes himself a check for $32 million before the fight, he is certainly "gambling on himself" and on the PPV and gate receipts. Sure, Ellerbe and Richard Schaefer "thinks PPV would exceed 1.5 million". That is what they said about the Ortiz date.

Well, perhaps they have a crystal ball. I'd like to borrow that so that I can bet on the next big lotto!
