Mayweather shines in test from Cotto

LAS VEGAS -- When people look back at the Hall of Fame-worthy careers of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Miguel Cotto, the boxers' fight on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena will be the one they probably remember.
It was a barnburner, one of the most exciting fights of Mayweather's career; Cotto, of course, is typically in exciting fights. But as usual, it was Mayweather who put his punches together and evaded enough to win, taking a unanimous decision and a junior middleweight title for the second time in his career.

"You're a helluva champion," Mayweather said to Cotto in the ring after the fight. "You're the toughest guy I ever fought."
Now Mayweather -- headed to jail on June 1 for an 87-day sentence at the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas for a domestic battery conviction -- can offer a new mantra: 43 have tried and now 43 have failed.
"Look, when fights are on pay-per-view, you want to give the fans what they pay for, and that's excitement," said Mayweather, who elected to do an in-ring interview with HBO's Larry Merchant after threatening not to following their blow-up during a postfight interview after Mayweather's September victory against Victor Ortiz.
Cotto didn't go down without a fight. He pressed and pushed and cracked Mayweather with many hard punches, probably as many punishing shots as Mayweather has ever been hit with.
Mayweather is 35 now, and maybe the pound-for-pound king has lost just a step, so he is a little easier to hit. But he still got the job done and, for a change, in very exciting fashion.
In picking up his eighth world title belt in five weight classes, Mayweather looked good in victory. But Cotto, 31, a three-division champion in his own right, also looked good. In fact, Cotto gave Mayweather a tougher fight than he gave Manny Pacquiao in their 2009 welterweight title bout, a 12th-round knockout for Pacquiao.
"The judges said I lost the fight. I can't do anything else. I have to take my defeat," Cotto said. "I brought my best and I did my best every morning in training camp and I did my best tonight."
Mentally reborn following his emotional victory against Antonio Margarito in their December rematch, Cotto fought as well as he has in years.

Rafael: Body Of Work Saul Alvarez suffered the first cut of his career Saturday, but you should've seen the other guy. Canelo battered Shane Mosley with body shots in a runaway decision.

"I'm happy with my fight and with my performance," he said. "So is my family. I can't ask for anything else."
With most of the crowd of 16,047 cheering for Puerto Rico's Cotto, he was able to bull Mayweather into the corner and make him fight back round after round. And Mayweather was happy to oblige.
Most of the rounds appeared competitive, but Mayweather pulled away to win 118-110 on judge Robert Hoyle's scorecard, while Dave Moretti and Patricia Morse Jarman each scored it 117-111. ESPN.com had it 116-112 for Mayweather.
Mayweather (43-0, 26 KOs) sat down on his punches and rocked Cotto in the fourth round, turning over his right hand to land several of them flush.
Cotto (37-3, 30 KOs), who made $8 million plus a percentage of the pay-per-view profits, got Mayweather's respect in the sixth round when he landed a pinpoint jab to his nose, drawing blood. After the punch, Mayweather nodded his head to Cotto out of respect.
"When you come to fight and are in the heat of the battle, those things happen," Mayweather said.
Every time Cotto trapped Mayweather on the ropes -- which he did often and had some success with it -- the crowd would go wild. But Mayweather would eventually escape the trouble.
Mayweather closed strong with a huge 12th round, hurting Cotto with a nasty uppercut and right hands.
The fans had gotten their monies worth, and Mayweather had a satisfying victory. HBO will replay the memorable fight, along with the Saul "Canelo" Alvarez-Shane Mosley undercard fight, on May 12 (10:15 p.m. ET/PT).

"He's a tough competitor," Mayweather said. "I knew I was going to have to come in the ring to fight hard and execute the game plan. Cotto is a future Hall of Famer and he is no pushover. We fought at his weight class. He came to fight. He didn't come to survive, he came to fight. So I dug down and fought him back."
Mayweather, who earned a boxing-record guarantee of $32 million (plus a hefty percentage of the pay-per-view profit), was focused on the fight throughout the promotion, never seeming to let the looming jail sentence unnerve him. He kept up the brave front after the fight, as well.
"You're dealt obstacles in your life," Mayweather said. "You have to take the good with the good and the bad with the bad. When June 1 comes, the only thing I can do is accept it."
Mayweather said he plans to fight again this year after his release from jail. The fight the world wants is to see him face Manny Pacquiao.
Once again, like a broken record, Mayweather made it sound like that won't happen, despite protests to the contrary.
"Bob Arum is in the way," Mayweather said of the Top Rank promoter who represents Pacquiao (and once promoted Mayweather). "He's stopping the fans from getting what they want. Let's give the fans what they want."
Mayweather, however, has demanded more than 50 percent of the money in the fight, which has been a nonstarter. He didn't acknowledge that fact after the Cotto fight. "I've been trying to make the Pacquiao fight," Mayweather said.
Then he turned to his demands for blood and urine drug testing for the fight. Pacquiao has repeatedly agreed, which Mayweather won't acknowledge.
"Cotto didn't have the problem taking the random blood and urine tests," he said. "Why shouldn't Pacquiao? If he's the best, take the test."
That is the same old argument -- but for another day. On this night, Mayweather took the test from Cotto inside the ring.
He passed.
Again.

I watched the fight and the way the judges see it and the way we seen it was totally different. Maybe Cotto didn't see it the way the judges seen it either and that's why he didn't come out to be interviewed.

There was nothing wrong with the judge's decision and Cotto appeared to be okay with it. Both Cotto and Floyd fought a great fight and there should be no complaints from real boxing fans.

Good fight... Miguel fought his heart out! Just too hard to hit Floyd.... probably the best defense in the game.
Miguel did not back down... gave it his best.. I gave it to Floyd by a 3 round margin.
I do think Miguel should have thrown more left hooks... Floyd leans to his left.. Miguel kep throwing rights.
Did you see how much bigger Floyd looked than Cotto? Floyd is one big dude with a huge reach.. all elbows.
Floyd looked much bigger than Miguel... and Miguel is bigger than Manny..
Floyd would be much much bigger than Manny if they ever fought.. I would have to give the edge to
Floyd on size and defense alone. If ever this fight would happen.
As for Canelo,,, in my worthless opinion... the Mosely that knocked out Margarito woulda beat Canelo handily..
Shane had no power nor stamina last night... and still got some good shots in... Canelo really never hurt the 40 year old.
I myself do not think much of Canelo.. he is doing what Oscar did on his way up.. fighting old guys on the way down.
Its time to match Canelo up with a true contender... but then why kill the goose that is laying the golden eggs?

Thank you soulman... appreciate the compliment..
I DID mean Floyd leans to his Right alot.... i was waiting for Miguel to feint a right and nail him
with a left hook when he leaned...
By the way,,, more of my 2 centavos.
I thought it was not classy for Miguel not to hang around for the interview after the fight.
People paid BIG money to watch this... he owes it to the paying public to hang around
and at least thank them for shelling out all that dough. Especially his own fans....
I bet he is having second thoughts today... he has always been a class act... the contract
calls for an interview after...HBO pays big bucks for this... not a good call by Miguel.
Floyd did... which surprised me.

Floyd got all bloodied and beaten up. Cotto "EXPOSED" Floyd. Cotto clearly beat Floyd in 4 rounds and made most of the rest of the rounds close. There was easily enough close rounds that could have been given to Cotto, that would have given him the fight. Floyd said that he was going to KO Cotto and yet he never even hurt him. Floyd looked bad fighting a shot Cotto. Floyd should have been able to get Cotto out of there or at the very least, totally dominated him for most of the fight and yet, Floyd was able to do neither. Floyd is washed up and dropping fast. In another fight or two, Floyd is going to be just like Shane Mosley. People will be begging him to stop before he gets serious hurt.

In a Mayweather/Pac fight, there is no way Floyd could ever beat Manny. If a slower, washed up, and softer hitting Cotto can do that much damage to Floyd, then putting Floyd in with Manny would be like putting Floyd in a meat grinder. If Manny enters the same zip code as Floyd, then Floyd better pack up and move on. Floyd has no business in the same ring as Manny. If the fight would ever take place, I truly fear for Floyd's safety.

It has been a good run Floyd, but it is time to retire before you end up like Ali.

The fact that PBF fought the Boricua at 154 pounds even, sent a message to Arum,(not Pacquiao)that to take away a crown from a champ you have to be honest and rightful. Draining a man is cheating, that is why Floyd mention this when he said Cotto was undefeated. Floyd let Cotto step into the scale at a comfortable weight and he barely stepped at 151 pounds which is 4 pounds over the welterweight limit. Arum did not agree to fight Cotto under the same circumstances. Why?? I know. Like I said before, either of this men will beat the Pacquiao that fought JMM. That is why Arum did not fight Cotto, he wanted to drain him all over again. Let's see the upcoming fight against Bradley, a smaller man. Then we can speculate all we want.............

I really enjoyed the fight, it's a shame fighters gotta get old but I see Mayweather missing a very small step but Cotto tried like the champion he is and you can only have one winner an I think Cotto left ring because he had so much emotion not able to deal with losing to Mayweather. And I myself do not think much of Canelo either, he has what 41 fights and Oscar says he needs more experience ?? Heck Mayweather has 43 fights and not far from retirement so I guess Canelo just keeps fighting he will beat all the old timers.

Going up to 154 did not improve Cotto's speed or his experience level and yet Cotto had no problem finding or hitting Mayweather. Floyd's super human defense is non existent. Floyd's super human accuracy doesn't exist either, as Cotto blocked or dodged a lot of Mayweather's punches. Lets face it, Cotto doesn't have the fastest hand speed and when he is coming forward, he is there to be hit, yet floyd struggled against Cotto in both areas. Plaster fist was partly right when he called Floyd, "Fraud Gayweather". I am not even a Roy Jones Jr. fan, but after this fight I am in total agreement with him when he recently said that in his prime, he would have struggled against Pac but he would make easy work out of Mayweather. I can easily see a prime RJJ destroying Floyd in the ring.

Say what you want about plaster fist, but he was dead on when he said that Floyd was a fraud.

i dont even know what your talking about.. fraud.. Floyd has fought almost every top fighter in the division.. cotto, mosley, hatton, need i say more.At least floyd is fighting good fighters.. not like pacman,, now he is just picking fighters that have no chance at all of winning. like bradley who has absolutly no chance of winning a round let alone the fight... Thats one ppv buy this cat wont be purchasing.. Bob arum has pac turned inside out and upside down.. Bob arum dont care if pacquiao fights bozo the clown as long as bob arum manages both fighters so he can double dip on the collection side..

Yogi my friend,, I dont think you are giving Miguel any credit,,, of course he hit Floyd, of course he bloodied him...
BUT Miguel is suppose to do that.. he is a champion, not a chump. Everyone on the forum is surprised because Miguel
hit Floyd and bloodied him... and the fact that Floyd did not knock Miguel out..
Lets give Miguel credit, he is a world champion and came to fight, not to run or hug. I dont think Miguel struggled as you say,
he was fighting an undefeated fighter with probably the best defense in the game. Also a bigger fighter with a huge reach.
He fought the best he could. Just got beat by a superior boxer.
And for all those that say Manny knocked Cotto out and Floyd didn't,,, then lets compare what Floyd did to Marquez...
and Manny didn't. Marquez did not win one round against Floyd. Yet he has fought Manny 3 very close fights.
So everything is relative. Lets not be so biased and give credit where credit is due.
I was rooting for Miguel but thought Floyd won.
I am a big Manny fan... but I give Floyd much credit, he has beat everyone they put in front of him. He is undefeated
and you can't argue with perfection. In fact I think he has outgrown the guys he has fought. Miguel is not small and
Floyd looked much bigger than Miguel did. I think Floyd should start going UP in weight and quit fighting at this division.
Manny is the very best at his weight class.. but he is small in stature. If you remember, Marquez looked bigger in their
last fight, and was heavier. I just don't think Manny can fight a big man like Floyd and win.
Plus he has already said he will NOT go past 147.. so i guess case is closed.
Was a very good fight and both fighters should be given a lot of credit for the giving the fans their money's worth.
This is just my humble opinion and look forward to reading any rebuttals... thats what the forum is all about.

If you are 43 and 0, it is more then likely do to good match making. Alverez has 40 wins and 0 losses at the age of 21 Should I be impressed by that?

Lets face it man, Floyd is getting to the point to where he is shot. He was supposed to knock out a washed up Cotto and he didn't. Not only did he not knock Cotto out, he was never able to even hurt Cotto. Floyd's power is gone. Cotto was able to get in and not only hit Floyd, but he was able to bloody him up. That shows you that Floyds super defense is either gone or never really existed. I seen lots of times in this fight where Floyd was either hitting air or getting his punches blocked. Cotto is not a hard person to find, especially when he is coming forward. That tells me that Floyds speed and accuracy is gone. Floyd is shot, plain and simple. He should retire before he gets hurt.

Floyd better bend over and kiss Manny's ring the way he kissed HBO's arse, because there is no way he can beat Pac.

Why should I give credit to Cotto? Did you see of them give credit to Marquez for fighting the fight he did against PAC? Of courser you didn't. They were saying that Pac was shot and should retire because of it. I even heard you say that the way Pac preformed against Marquez, he should retire. We just watched this fight again, but this time it was against Mayweather and Cotto. The worse part is that the Marquez that fought Pac, would easily mop the ring with Cotto at 147.

I am extremely proud of Cotto...That was a hell of a fight just as I predicted... Mayweather did win the fight but Cotto gave him his toughest fight yet... Even though he did call out you know who..I still maintain it will never happen...Ooooppps I said too much...lol

there is always an angle with manny and arum.. Same with delahoya, he had him catch weight to 145 as well... And manny took him apart.. But yet his is the welterweight champ.. How can you win belts if your keep fighting at catch weights..

They kept this routine to make it comfortable for Manny and uncomfortable to his opponents. Making him a winner of a catch weight belt without making the weight.

Alverez has 40 wins and 0 losses at the age of 21 Should I be impressed by that?

No, Canelo hasn't have Diego Corrales and Arturo Gatti on his répertoire, neither has Manny Paquiao. He ran away from the undefeated Coralles like chicken from a fox. Meanwhile PBF beat the hell out of Corales.

Todays rag quotes Floyd as saying he is 80 percent sure he will retire... No chance he will fight Manny.
Thats a done deal... Neither Manny nor Floyd want anything to do with each other,, so we really
should drop all the animosity on this forum.. If Manny will not fight over 147,, according to him.
Floyd could not come down to 147 if he was in a concentration camp.
Again Floyd gave much credit to Miguel... toughest fight anyone has ever given him.
Miguel should be proud... I am not a Puerto Rican but was super proud of his performance.
He came to fight! And fight he did.
Ok,,, lets have Miguel and Manny again!!!
