A couple of months ago, a friend of mine made a very interesting comment regarding Daniel Bryan.

He said, “You know, as good as Daniel Bryan is, he hasn’t had very many memorable matches in the WWE.”

I thought about it for a minute or two, and you know what? He was right.

Even though Bryan had some incredible matches in Ring of Honor and for other indy promotions, he had only had a couple of WWE matches that really stood out to me at that point.

I don’t blame that on Bryan, of course. I blame that on a lack of opportunity, but that’s neither here nor there.

As I tried to recall some of Bryan’s best WWE matches, though, one kept popping up in my head: Bryan vs. Dolph Ziggler in a Champion vs. Champion match at Bragging Rights in 2010.

Back at that time, Bryan was the United States Champion and Ziggler was the Intercontinental Champion, but both men were still looking to make their mark in the WWE.

Bryan was fresh off his run on NXT, and Ziggler had only been around for about two years under the Ziggler character.

While this match didn’t have an incredible amount of hype or build, it was arguably the most important match of their careers up to that point.

For the first time ever, they got the chance to really and truly shine on the pay-per-view stage.

Bryan and Ziggler got more than 16 minutes to deliver a classic match, and aside from The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 26, it was probably the best match of 2010.

That’s a huge statement considering how many good matches we see from the WWE each year. However, if you take away all of the emotion that Taker vs. HBK had, I’m not so sure that Bryan vs. Ziggler wouldn’t have topped it.

This was a great technical classic between two guys who weren’t main eventers. Had their bout had the hype surrounding it that other big matches had, I have no doubt that we’d be talking about it for years to come.

Bryan vs. Ziggler is, to this day, still one of the top matches of each guy’s WWE career. It was one of the first times I said to myself, “Man, both of these guys are gonna be huge.”

Less than two years later, Bryan is the hottest act in pro wrestling while Ziggler has established himself as one of the best in-ring workers around.

My, how those two have grown.
