Buffalo, NY (WGR550) -- The Buffalo Sabres roared back with a pair of goals in the third period to tie the Colorado Avalanche, but see their win streak end at six games after a ten round shootout. Matt Hendricks was able to break the stalemate to give the 'Lanche a 4-3 win over Buffalo Saturday night at HSBC Arena.

Matt Duchene scored twice in the first period to give the Avalanche a 2-0 lead. A turnover in the defensive zone turned into the first goal for Duchene in the first period and a 1-0 lead. Henrik Tallinder gave up the puck, and Duchene knocked in a shot after a pass from Hendricks. The rookie broke to the net and chipped in a rebound chance past Patrick Lalime, who was sprawled down on his stomach in the crease. Brandon Yip and Milan Hejduk were credited with assists on the goal.

Drew Stafford struck with just seconds remaining on a Buffalo power play to cut into the Avalanche lead, 2-1 late in the second period. John-Michael Liles was in the box when Stafford scored. Paul Gaustad and Tim Kennedy picked up the assists on the goal. Yip restored the two-goal Colorado lead just a minute later with his fifth goal of the season. Paul Stastny and Ryan Wilson assisted on the goal.

Each team took a pair of penalties in the middle stanza, but the Sabres were the only ones to score on the man advantage. Colorado had a 4-on-3 opportunity for 28 seconds but only mustered one shot.

Thomas Vanek followed his shot and was rewarded with his 12th goal of the year that cut the Colorado lead to 3-2 midway through the third period. Vanek tapped in the rebound after goalie Craig Anderson kicked the rebound right back to the forward. Stafford and Derek Roy were credited with assists on the goal.

Jochen Hecht took a shot from the point and it beat Anderson to tie the game 3-3 late in regulation. Hecht spun and fired from above the face-off circle to score the equalizer. Tim Connolly extended his point streak to 9 games with the lone assist on the goal. The Sabres outshot Colorado 15-4 and carried the play for much of the third period.

Both teams created end-to-end rushes in the overtime period, but neither goaltender allowed a shot to get by. There were only three shots on goal in the extra period, with Colorado getting the edge 2-1 over the Sabres.

Lindy Ruff chose to have Buffalo shoot first, and Anderson stopped Stafford to open the shootout. Hejduk scored with a backhand shot past Lalime for the shootout lead, 1-0. Connolly came in next and beat Anderson, while Wojtek Wolski was stopped by the Buffalo goaltender. The shootout went all the way to the tenth round, before Hendricks beat Lalime and give Colorado the victory.

Lalime stopped 27 of 30 shots in the shootout loss, while Anderson turned away 33 of Buffalo's 35 shots in the win. Buffalo went 1 for 4 on the power play, while the Avs were 0 for 5 with the man advantage.
