WBC super lightweight champ Danny Garcia can prove he's for real by beating Amir Khan 18 hours ago

LAS VEGAS – Little buzz surrounds Danny Garcia. His so-called grand arrival at Mandalay Bay on Tuesday was largely met with indifference. A deejay urged fans to "give it up for world champion Danny Garcia" and the 50 or so folks milling around the hotel lobby gave a lukewarm effort.

One woman standing near the makeshift stage where Garcia would sign autographs turned to her companion and asked, "Who is he? Is he that UFC guy?"
Garcia smiled and waved and did all the right things as he fulfilled his obligations before defending his World Boxing Council and newly reinstated World Boxing Association super lightweight title against Amir Khan on Saturday on HBO at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

(Getty Images)Garcia is an unbeaten world champion and seemingly in the prime of his career. But despite what he's done in the last 15 months – beating veterans Erik Morales, Kendall Holt and Nate Campbell – he still has much to prove.
As he prepares to meet Khan, the former World Boxing Association champion, Garcia must confront the skeptics who wonder whether he's here by virtue of shrewd matchmaking and careful handling or whether he's the latest in a long line of boxing stars from Philadelphia.
Beating Morales in 2002 was a major accomplishment; doing it against the shopworn 35-year-old version in 2012 was something much less.
The same can be said of Garcia's wins over Campbell, who was 39 at the time, and Holt. As is sadly too common in modern boxing, Garcia holds what is regarded as a major title belt without a win over an elite boxer in his prime.
Garcia, though, is hardly concerned about the skepticism. No one will be able to say he hasn't fought an elite boxer in his prime after he meets the 25-year-old Khan, and Garcia said he believes his performance will open eyes.
He's Philadelphia to the core and insists his life experience of largely living on the wrong side of the tracks has prepared him for this moment.
"A Philadelphia fighter is a tough fighter who fights to the death," the affable Garcia said. "It all starts in the gym. If you've ever been to a Philadelphia gym, we don't have sparring sessions. We have gym wars."

Garcia's performance against Khan should prove if he can fight at the world-class level. He won the title by beating Morales in Houston in March, though Morales was long past his prime.
There were many who believed Morales should have been long retired, but he also was able to hit Garcia with some big shots. Garcia won the bout with a strong finish.
"Morales is a great fighter," Garcia said. "They may say he's past his prime, but he just beat a young guy before he fought me that was 23-0. He stopped him. Everybody thought [Marcos] Maidana was going to crush him, but you saw what happened in that fight. It was a close fight that could have gone either way.
"The question for this fight is this: People say Morales was old, but can Khan take the punches I was hitting Morales with? That's the question for this fight and that's what we'll find out."
In Khan, Garcia is meeting a guy who has been on the periphery of the pound-for-pound rankings for several years and has the reputation as one of the sport's next big stars.
A win over Khan (26-2, 18 KOs) can cement Garcia's place as one of the elite super lightweights in the world.
"This fight is going to make me a star," Garcia said. "It's the next level and I'm up for the challenge."
Garcia's father, Angel, who also doubles as his trainer, certainly believes that. Angel Garcia has begun a war of words with Khan, repeatedly insulting him.
Some of his comments have outraged Khan's fans, prompting Angel Garcia to encourage them to come find him.
"I don't hide," he said. "I walk the streets by myself."
His son promises not to hide in the ring. He's eager to stand in front of Khan and see who wilts first.
Khan was knocked out in 54 seconds by Breidis Prescott in 2008 when he was caught with a punch he didn't see. Those are always the shots that hurt a fighter the most, but Khan hasn't been able to shake the reputation of being chinny since that night, despite subsequently fighting hard hitters such as Maidana, Zab Judah and Marco Antonio Barrera.
Garcia trusts in the explosiveness of his fists. Perhaps it's the naiveté of youth, but he's willing to get into a slugfest and take his chances.
"When you put two young guys in there, we're going to go at it," Garcia said. "You know big punches are going to land because we're young and we're explosive. I don't think I have to outwork him because me, I have one-punch power. A lot of fighters, they have to put pressure on him and outwork him the whole 12 rounds because they can't hurt him.
"With me, I can sit back, put the pressure on him, then, sometimes counter, hit him with a hard shot and stop him in his tracks and hurt him."
If he does that, he'll silence the skeptics for good and prove that this Philadelphia fighter, as least, is the real thing.

Amir Khan can earn fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. by convincingly beating Danny Garcia3 hours ago

LAS VEGAS – Amir Khan is looking at a daily double of unbeaten fighters.
If the super lightweight title holder defeats Danny Garcia on Saturday in their World Boxing Association-World Boxing Council unification bout at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, he's likely going to meet an opponent with another perfect record.
http://l1.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/fisSTDRqVVx_vzCmk0piUA--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTMxMA--/http://media.zenfs.com/en_US/Sports/Getty_Images/23425bfe02ffdf6125f5fb440364d89c-getty-145716708.jpgThe normally reserved Amir Khan has gotten into a war of words with the Garcia family. (Getty)
That would be a fighter you may have heard a bit about – a guy by the name of Mayweather.
Barring a miracle that would help to arrange a fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, Mayweather's next opponent will likely be Khan, assuming he defeats Garcia on Saturday.
It's why Khan says the Garcia match "is a big, big fight for me," even though he's a 5-1 favorite and Garcia is primarily known for his father's outlandish boasts and frequently offensive trash talk.
Angel Garcia told reporters "Pakistanis can't fight," – Khan is British, of Pakistani descent – and said God punished Khan in 2008 when he was knocked out by Breidis Prescott.
Khan hasn't been pleased having to listen to Angel Garcia's zany comments, but he knows he'll get the upper hand simply by convincingly winning the fight.
And at Thursday's news conference, Khan did something he rarely does and predicted a knockout. And after predicting the knockout, he turned and spoke directly to Angel Garcia.
"I will knock Danny Garcia out," Khan said. "I will take the world titles home. I know Danny didn't train as hard as me. I promise I will knock him out. That is the only way. "I cannot wait until after the fight when we stand here and I have knocked your son out. He is going to see what a Pakistani British fighter can do. I cannot wait to get in there."

[

Danny Garcia has left the trash talk up to his father, who has made a career of making outrageous boasts. It can put pressure on his son, but it's happened so much that it's just part of the job for Danny.
He sloughed off any concern that his father's words will make his job that much more difficult.
"My Dad talked [expletive] 23 times, and I backed it up 23 times," Danny Garcia said. "I am 23-0. Come Saturday, he will have talked [expletive] 24 times and I am going to back it up for the 24th time."
An issue for Khan, though, is whether he can keep his composure and stick to his game plan, which should be to keep a jab in Garcia's face and counter his wild shots.
Khan (26-2, 18 KOs) has fought a far better level of opposition and kept his cool in even the toughest spots, but Angel Garcia has made things more personal than anyone had previously.
There is clearly pressure on Khan, who not only needs to win but to do so in impressive fashion to guarantee the Mayweather fight.
Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer concedes the pressure is on Khan, but he is convinced Khan is up to the task.
"Amir is too much of a pro to let that get to him," Schaefer said. " … He doesn't appreciate hearing these things, but I don't think you'll see him be reckless. I think he has some additional fire now. The Amir Khan I saw at the press conference [Thursday] was different than I've ever seen before. He's got great motivation."

A bout with Mayweather would be life-changing for him. Khan has been pushed relentlessly by Golden Boy and HBO over the last few years, but he still hasn't crossed over and become a huge ticket seller in the U.S.
His fight with Lamont Peterson, which he lost in controversial fashion in December, did a solid 3.62 rating and drew 1.56 million fans on HBO, indicating that there is an audience for him.
Schaefer said Khan is the leader of the third tier of draws in boxing. Mayweather and Pacquiao are alone at the top, Schaefer said, followed by Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. at the next level.
"It's a pretty good group to be around," Schaefer said. "But what he needs is that one signature win, and you get that by beating a Mayweather. If he beats Mayweather, all of a sudden, overnight, everyone is talking about Amir Khan."
A potential Mayweather fight could be coming at the right time for Khan, who is only 25 despite competing at the highest level for several years.
Freddie Roach, his Hall of Fame trainer, said Khan is maturing into the fighter he thought he could become.
"He's getting there, but I don't think he's quite reached his peak yet," Roach said. "We're working on settling him down a lot more, getting him where he's not jumping around and bouncing around so much and where he's sitting down on his punches. I think you'll see a more mature Amir in this fight."
He'd better be ready, because if he's looking at fighting Mayweather next, he's going to need everything he's got, and more, to win.
Khan, though, isn't worried. He wouldn't speak directly of Mayweather other than to say he's looking to take the next step.
A win over Garcia would be a massive step if only because it would be what vaults him into the biggest fight of 2013.
"Those are the kinds of fights I want," Khan said. "I've always looked for those kinds of fights and I always will. I like to challenge myself and give my fans what they're looking for."

Garcia speaks up for himself at final presser for Khan showdown by Doug Fischer

LAS VEGAS – Danny Garcia has been content to let his father and trainer Angel Garcia to do the pre-fight trash talking to his opponents throughout his pro career.
The undefeated 140-pound beltholder continued to allow his father to handle the “smack talk” during the build up to his junior welterweight title unification bout against Amir Khan – a task his bombastic father ran wild with during media events and interviews – but Garcia spoke up for himself at the final press conference on Thursday at the Mandalay Bay, the site for Saturday’s HBO-televised showdown.
http://cdn2.ringtv.craveonline.com/images/stories/2012/July/12-Garcia-at-podium-350.jpg“My dad has talked s__t 23 times before I fought and 23 times I backed it up,” Garcia (23-0, 14 knockouts) said during his turn behind the podium. “On Saturday, it will be 24 times I’ve backed it up. We’re a team, my father and I.”
So far, they have been a successful duo. Angel Garcia guided his son to two U.S. national amateur titles before turning him pro in late 2007. Three and a half years after his pro debut, Garcia took on his first former titleholder, Nate Campbell, who he outpointed over 10 rounds last April.
Garcia followed the Campbell victory with decisions over former 140-pound beltholder Kendall Holt last October and WBC titleholder Erik Morales in March. Angel Garcia talked a lot trash and caused his share of ruckus at the press conferences and weigh-ins for those two bouts, but the 49-year-old trainer took his antics to another level for the Khan fight. Some would say he took it straight into the gutter by disrespecting the British star’s Pakistani heritage and perhaps taking a stab at Khan’s Islamic beliefs.
“I ain’t never met a Pakistani who can fight,” the elder Garcia told RingTV videographer Bill Emes during an exclusive interview (http://ringtv.craveonline.com/videos/video/514193-angel-and-danny-garcia-interviews-and-workout) at his North Philadelphia gym.
“Khan’s an overrated European fighter. He got knocked out in Europe, that’s the truth. He blamed it on his God and came to America to hide behind (trainer) Freddie Roach. This fight is going to come down to who’s stronger mentally, physically and spiritually; and I know Khan’s God already – his God is a punishing God – my God is a loving God.”
Khan (26-2, 18 KOs) is not at all amused by Garcia’s vulgar brand of irreverence, and the 26-year-old WBA titleholder vented a little bit during his turn behind the podium on Thursday.
“I promise you – and I never make these kinds of guarantees – but I will knockout Danny Garcia,” Khan said as the members of his huge entourage cheered loudly. “And I can’t wait until after the fight to see what you (Angel Garcia) will have to say.
“He says he’s never seen a Pakistani who can fight but he’s going to see one on Saturday night.”
Khan’s heated words led into an intense staredown immediately following the presser, during which time Garcia demanded that the 5-to-1 favorite look directly into his eyes.http://cdn.ringtv.craveonline.com/images/stories/2012/July/02-KhanGarciastaredown-350.jpg
“I told him to be a man and look into my eyes,” Garcia told RingTV.com. “He was looking at my nose. I know that trick. Some guys look into your eyes and it throws their clicker (heart) off. They try to get around that by looking at a dude’s nose.
“So I told him to look me in my eyes.”
Garcia believes Khan’s knockout prediction is proof that his father’s words have gotten under the Brit’s skin.
“He’s not being real,” Garcia said. “We all know his game is boxing and moving and staying on the outside. If he comes to me and tries to fight me, we know what will happen; he’s the one getting knocked out. He’s the one with the suspect chin.”
Khan maintains that Garcia has suspect pro credentials.
“He’s going to find out the difference between being a titleholder and an elite fighter,” he said. “I’m an elite fighter. No disrespect to Erik Morales but he had his day. He was done when he fought Garcia.
“Garcia fought someone who was way past his best.”
Garcia says a faded “El Terrible” is still a tougher fighter than Khan.
“I learned a lot in the Morales fight,” said Garcia, who dropped the Mexican legend hard in the 11th round of the bout he won by scores of 118-109, 117-110 and 116-112. “He’s got a lot of heart. I don’t know if Amir Khan has that much heart.
“Can Khan take the punches that Morales took from me?”
YOUNG GUNS
Many boxing insiders believe that Garcia, who turned 24 four days before the Morales bout, isn’t ready to face a fighter of Khan’s talent and experience.
Apart from predicting that “every boxing writer who picked Khan to win will choke on his own foot on Saturday,” Angel Garcia believes that young standouts – especially titleholders – should fight each other. And Khan, despite his many accomplishments, is only 25.
“That’s the way it used to be in boxing,” he said. “The biggest fights used to be between young men. Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Tommy Hearns, Felix Trinidad vs. Fernando Vargas, Oscar De La Hoya vs. Shane Mosley – all of these fighters were in their 20s.
“They were young and they were champions, so they fought each other. That’s why boxing was more popular then.”

This fight is a mismatch. In his day, Morales was a great fighter. He has been a bunch of rough fights and is way past his prime. Garcia fought a wore out, past prime Morales who was way out of shape for the fight. In the bad shape that Morales was, he gave Garcia about all he can handle. I just don't see Garcia being able to do much against a prime Khan.

Morales gives anyone all that they can handle, he did to Maidana. Maidana made Khan run all over the ring and Peterson gave him hell. Just like the Ortiz/ Josesito fight, an upset is on the making. I've always said, Khan is no prime but one of the bunch......

Congrats for your observation, means a little over trained. Garcia looked great, seen those upper arms? This kid has big shoulders and big upper arms, reminds me of Wilfredo Gomez in his prime. Looks like the job at the gym was well done. He's ready to rumble, he also has a chin to absorb Khan's best stuff. Can this be reciprocated by the Brit? We will soon see!!

Danny Garcia happens to be one of the last three boxing champs left that are Puerto Rican or from Puerto Rican heritage. Here some info about the young boxer. His mother is a paisana from my home town, so is Wilfredo Vasquez senior, Papito Vasquez Jr, Samuel Serrano and the great Chapo Rosario.

García was born in Northern Philadelphia to a mother from Bayamón, Puerto Rico and Ángel García originally from Naguabo, Puerto Rico, who was also a boxer. It was his father who introduced him to boxing, taking him to Philadelphia's Harrowgate Boxing Club when was ten years old, the minimum age allowed by local law for a minor to train. García Sr. has since been his primary boxing coach. Having been raised in the city with the second largest Puerto Rican community in the United States, García identified with his heritage, stating early in his career the desire to become the "next great Puerto Rican fighter". Garcia admired Boxing Hall of Famer Carlos Ortíz as his favorite boxer and considered Ortíz's fight against Lenny Matthews in Philadelphia among the most memorable he had ever witnessed.

Bingo!! I saw the same thing,, I am not sure if he looked drained because of the training or the promo schedule,,

look , I'm not big on racism and I certainly don't endorse trash '' god talk'' ... and I think that those who engage in
Such inappropriate speech are intolerable.. even if it's fora fight promotion...

Anyway ,, we'll save that for another tread ,, I think Angel Garcia is an uneducated a'shole ,, who needs an education
on etiquette , manners and diplomacy ,, especially if you want to be someone who is gong to handle the next big payday,, otherwise your just another redneck I the company of class.

having said that ,, i am anxious to see Danny Garcia vs Amir Khan .. may the best fighter win

Garcias win opens a floodgate to exciting matches in This Division, somewhat the Most Populated & Popular One, Let's See how long This One Holds Up, but at least like I Said It Brings a jolt to The Sport, which is desperately needed!

I do think Khan should consider changing careers... as you said... if you don't have
a chin,,, you aint gonna make it... T. Hearns vs Haglar and Leonard comes to mind.
We never mention Hector Camacho... he was a good P.R. champ...
Looks like August a dry boxing month.

What a punch that kid has, if it had landed on the chin, Amir would still be down looking out for the truck that hit him.
The kid is good, just needs some experience. You herd him, "bring anyone, the better they are, the better I'll be".
The best thing he has is youth, chin and a hell of a punch.
Agreed, august will be very dry.............

Yogi, where are you?
