By John F. McKenna (McJack): Ring Magazine middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (49-2-2, 28 KO’s) has been clamoring for a marquee fight for the past couple of years and his dream will be fulfilled when he enters the ring to take on World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-0-1, 32 KO’s). Martinez and Chavez will clash on September 15 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
Martinez is not worried about Julio’s height and weight advantage. Chavez has rehydrated up to as much as 180 pounds in recent fights after the weigh in. It is Sergio’s contention that it is to his advantage if Julio enters the ring at 180 pounds. Martinez believes the added weight will only serve to slow Chavez down and make him an easier target.
Sergio points out that Paul Williams and Kelly Pavilik were bigger than him and he was able to defeat both fighters convincingly. Martinez states that he will use his speed to neutralize Julio’s clear advantage in size. He adds that Chavez will have to carry the added weight around with him for many rounds and that as the fight progresses it will serve to slow him down making him easier to hit.
Martinez, who is also known as “Maravilla” to his fans, was quoted in “Bettor.com” saying:
“I don’t want to end this fight quickly. I want him to know what it’s like to be on this level and what it’s like to be against the real champion, and what it’s like to be with a person who will make you exert yourself to the max.”
Sergio is quick to acknowledge that Chavez is a much improved fighter from where he was a year ago and that he would have been a much easier opponent at that time. Martinez still believes however that he has the tools to break Julio down and that he has never fought anyone on Sergio’s level.
Chavez has improved dramatically in his most recent fights and has been transformed into an honest to goodness champion under the tutelage of veteran trainer Freddie Roach. Julio demonstrated a granite chin against the highly respected Andy Lee (28-2, 20 KO’s) in June and was able to walk through anything Lee dished out, stopping him in the 7th round.

I want Chavez to take it. I find there's no point if Martinez wins because there probably won't be any big fights for him unless he finally decides to move up in weight.

Never seen a Mex beat an Argentinian in that weight class, remember Carlos Monzon? Not even the Cuban/Mexican Napoles could beat him. Martinez will keep that dynasty alive by beating Chavez jr.

Yer right Fib.. but messicans really never got that big....in contrast,, Argentinians could never beat messicans at lower
weights either... Mexicans have really dominated the lighter weights in the past... Sanchez and Lopez both undefeated.
Napoles was past his prime when he fought Monzon... besides,,, who the hell did beat MOnzon?
Mantequilla was a Cuban... just lived in Mexico later in life..
Monzon and the undefeated Welsh Joe Calzaghe remind me of each other... both great champs...
I do agree withya though.... I think Martinez will beat Jr. later rounds,, or decision.

True Monzon was unbeatable, life itself beat him to the punch when he killed his wife and die in an auto accident. Mantequilla was Cuban but everyone thought of him as a mex. About tall mex, are you giving purina de crecer to your boxers? You and I both ruled the lower weight class in the past, so don't brag about it. hehehehe

Just plain champ.
Some say the best of all Mexican champs...Sanchez died young..
But yer right... P.R. has had many excellent champions..
Running a close second to the Mexicans!!! ;-)

totally agree plastikman, this is the fight i want to see.
i hope chavez wins, i want to see just how far he can go. he's got the basic skills plus he can take a punch. once he learns to take less punches, the sky is the limit, as long as he's serious about fighting and not partying. who can blame him, he's a rockstar right now.

Sergio is pushing 40... if he is to be beaten,, now is Chavez chance.
He has to get all over him.. like he did with Lee.
Be ready to go a full 12.

I think this maybe a great fight for Chavez especially if he can deal with Sergios speed, to me the last few fights althought Sergio won he didn't look good in many rounds and if Chavez hits him as hard as Margarito did with his special hand wraps gonna be a long night for Sergio. Chavez has a similar style to Margarito so gonna be a great fight to watch.

this time i will go for martinez..if chavez decides to fight inside face to face like he always fights well then he will have problems. martinez has a very good punching power that if he catches jr with his left, well you know the end!!!he is going to get nocked down.jr hasnt fight a good fighter like martinez, but i hope this fight does'nt turn out to be a big CIRCUS.. lol

Well,, if Chavez fights inside he is going to have to smother Sergio and really dig into the old guys ribs...
Only hope is to wear him down.. use his much bigger size.
Looks great on paper.

Well.....That the only way Chavez knows how to fight.. He has some hand speed but not foot speed... If Martinez sticks and moves then he may just whoop on him........

Well said bolivia,,, but Martinez knows this... he will try not to get pinned on the ropes the way Lee was..
Jr gonna hafta put him on the ropes and not let him out... just pound the rib cage.
Don't know if the viejo can take it there... the Brits hurt him to the body..
I am starting to have a change of heart.... Jr looking better to me now..
Younger, much bigger and probably hungrier at this point.

Old is the wind and still blows. Martinez has the punch to put him away, also the speed, left side stand will confuse Chavez. Forget about size, you saw Williams didn't you?

Agreed Fib,,, but remember,,, the Brits were pounding Sergio.. both were ahead after 8 rounds....
unfortunately the Brits don't have staying power...and even the wind blows itself out.
Its going to come down to, can Jr keep up the relentless attack for 12 rounds?
Or will Sergio at 38 or 39 now, succomb to a barrage of body and head blows?
Either way it will be a good fight. Both men put on a good show.
Sergio has won his last 2 or 3 fights by k.o. but has not looked good doing it.. (cept for Williams where
he closed his eyes and hit the jackpot)
Where Jr has looked good. (lotta if's in this fight)
I think youth will be served.

staying power.
This is what it will be about, who ever has late round stamina and power will win this match. Sergio is proven to have lots of it, now, will the kid have some after running all over in pursued of the Argentinian?

If you would’ve asked boxing fans a year ago who would win between Middleweight Kingpin Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, the majority of people who pick Martinez without a second thought.
Fast forward to today where a fight between them is finally on the horizon and it is now not such a foregone conclusion to most. Chavez has improved and his significant size advantage over most of his opponents has become more evident and an important factor. The fight is now considered a much closer affair and has made this anticipated showdown even that much more enticing.
When Sergio Martinez spoke to BoxingScene’s official radio show The Boxing Lab, he was asked what his thoughts were regarding those who now feel his match up with Chavez is a much closer contest.
“Easy it won’t be” said Martinez. “But I will have a great triumph and those that think Chavez can beat me are totally mistaken”.
Martinez is determined to beat his rival who he’s been chasing for over a year. He’s promised to knock Chavez out and Chavez in return promised the same. With so much emotion and hostility invested, one has to wonder if Martinez may get careless or be over aggressive and have it work against him in the fight.
“It doesn’t worry me. On the contrary, I know I’m very motivated and I’m dangerous when I’m motivated. My job is to look for the knockout and this fight won’t be the exception” Martinez would tell The Boxing Lab.
In a fight most thought we would never see Chavez is putting his undefeated record, WBC world title, and the risk of taking a popularity hit if he were to lose such a high profile fight. Martinez has been the victim of bad decisions before and the thought of him being able to get a decision in this fight comes to mind. But on Martinez’s part, he’s not worried about it.
“Now days I have more experience. And aside from experience, I have the capacity, motivation, and the hunger to go and win by knockout. There will be no other judges in the ring except my two fists”.

By rights Martinez is the champ and the champ is usually the favorite... My thoughts are that Jr has looked very good
in his previous fights and seems to really be improving... whereas Sergio has looked pretty ragged in his last fights..
He has been pounded by right hands.. he is old, but his greatest asset is his staying power, he is there at the end.
He is a little man, and is going to be 39.. i figure the bigger much heavier man, as in Jr.. will deal some heavy
body blows, breaking ribs and inducing internal bleeding, to say nothing of breaking up the spleen. ;-)
If Jr is really really training for this bout, and he has a manager that knows what he is doing... i think he should win.
Every champions day to lose comes sooner or later.. might be Sergio's day.
Should be a great fight.. on paper. I like Jr but would not be surprised if Sergio wins.
