On the first SmackDown of August, we saw Antonio Cesaro gain his second win over US champion Santino Marella.
Usually in a situation like this, the challenger would receive a title match, which seems logical to assume will happen to Cesaro.
But is he ready to be the US champion?
This is the first time we have seen WWE pay any attention to Cesaro since he first debuted as the man who stole Aksana away from Teddy Long and helped John Laurinaitis make Teddy's life a living hell.
Then he disappeared for a bit. He would pop up occasionally, but then fade back to the darkness just as quickly, seeming to indicate that WWE had little faith in the character.
When it comes to whether he is ready to be champion, there are really two ways to look at the situation; Cesaro's WWE experience and Cesaro's past experience.
In terms of his WWE experience, no, he is not ready.
His level of exposure is simply not high enough yet to justify him holding one of the titles in WWE. He needs more time to show the fans what he is capable of.
His matches with Santino have both been way too short for anyone to get an idea of what this talented wrestler is capable of.
Now, if we base whether he is ready to be champion on his past experience, then yes, he is ready to be US champion.
Before he was Antonio Cesaro, he was Claudio Castagnoli and he is a 12-year veteran of the business, having found success in both Europe and the United States.
While wrestling for promotions like Ring of Honor and Chikara, he showcased his talents as both a singles and tag team wrestler.
He has even teamed with fellow WWE superstar Daniel Bryan and former WWE superstars Dave Taylor in the 2009 King of Trios tournament held at the former ECW arena.
The real-world experience is there, but the WWE fans need to know that. Not everyone who watches WWE seeks out information regarding the past of new superstars, so to a lot of people, he is just some new guy with a rugby gimmick.
WWE acknowledges Tensai's Japanese experience. Why not mention that Cesaro is also a world-travelling talent?
There is a lot of potential locked in Cesaro that is just waiting to burst out of him and, hopefully if he wins the US title, he can move on to a feud that will give more of a push than Santino can give him.
Santino is a good talent, but beating him will not make fans think Cesaro is the next Chris Jericho.
It doesn't matter how hot Aksana is, the only person who can make Antonio Cesaro successful in WWE is Antonio Cesaro.
So, is he ready to hold the US title? The only way to know for sure is to wait and see what happens.
