Junior middleweights Gabriel Rosado and Charles Whittaker will meet in a world title elimination bout on Sept. 21 at the Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem, Pa., promoter Main Events announced Monday.
The fight is for the right to become the mandatory challenger for 154-pound world titleholder Cornelius "K9" Bundrage.
Rosado-Whittaker will be televised live on Main Events' "Fight Night" card (NBC Sports Net), which is being increased to a tripleheader to make room for the bout. Also on the card: the light heavyweight main event between former titleholder Gabriel Campillo (21-4-1, 8 KOs) of Spain and Sergey Kovalev (18-0-1, 16 KOs) of Russia and a welterweight fight between Bethlehem's Ronald Cruz (17-0, 12 KOs) and Antwone Smith (21-4-1, 12 KOs) of Miami.
Main Events was the only bidder when it won a purse bid on July 26 for the right to promote the bout. Its winning offer was just $10,000. Whitaker is entitled to 60 percent ($6,000) with Rosado entitled to 40 percent ($4,000), although since he is with promoter Russell Peltz, Main Events' partner on the show, they likely will make a side deal to pay Rosado more money.
Philadelphia's Rosado (20-5, 12 KOs), 26, has won six fights in a row since late 2010, including his last two in impressive fashion on "Fight Night." He dominated Jesus Soto Karass in a fifth-round knockout in January and then stopped longtime contender Sechew Powell in the ninth round on June 1 to send him into the elimination bout with Whittaker with tremendous momentum.
Whittaker (38-12-2, 23 KOs), 38, of the Cayman Islands, has won 14 consecutive fights since 2004, albeit against very limited competition.
