Red was used as the color of communist revolution during the collapse of Imperial Russia in the early 1900's. That's why one of the conflicts there happened between the 'White' anti-Bolshevik Russian Army and the 'Red' Communist Army. The background color of the Soviet flag was red, as was the later flag of China under Mao....
