new driver is set to be introduced Tuesday at Joe Gibbs Racing, but there also will be one leaving.
Joey Logano, who has spent his entire NASCAR career with JGR and has six Nationwide wins and one in Sprint Cup this season, will move to Penske Racing to drive its No. 22 Ford in 2013, the Observer and ThatsRacin.com have learned.
Logano’s move comes just as JGR is set to officially announce that former Cup champion Matt Kenseth is joining its organization in 2013. Kenseth will be introduced at JGR’s headquarters in Huntersville on Tuesday.
An official announcement of Logano’s move to Penske could come as early as Tuesday as well, multiple sources confirmed.
A request for comment from Penske Racing was not returned Monday.
Now in his fourth full Cup season, Logano, 22, has two wins, four poles, 16 top-five and 37 top-10 finishes in 136 starts. With one race remaining before the 12-driver field is set for the Chase, Logano still has a shot at one of two wild-card berths.
Should he add a victory Saturday night at Richmond, Va., to his win earlier this season at Pocono, Logano could qualify for the Chase for the first time.
JGR had hoped to retain Logano but did not have a full-time Cup ride to offer him for the 2013 season.
Sam Hornish Jr. now drives the No. 22 for Penske on a temporary basis, after former driver A.J. Allmendinger was released after being suspended indefinitely by NASCAR for failing a random drug test.
Logano would be the fourth driver in the No. 22 in two seasons.
