I’ve been up nearly half the night playing with this new Jynxbox Android HD unit. So far I’m very impressed with what I see. First thing I had to do was mount a micro sd drive onto the box which is very easy. The onboard cache is already full of apps that the manufacture predicts the user will find useful and there’s no more room for other data. These “custom” apps are not embedded in the firmware they can deleted at any time.

Here is a photo of one of two app screens that are full of apps

Android is an operating system designed for smart phones and tablets. I think the biggest hurdle the Jynx team had or any other for that matter, would be to emulate the swipe screen action. What they have done is provided a Bluetooth powered remote, where the user holds down a button and makes hand gestures to emulate the swipe.(kind of like the Nintendo wii). It takes a little bit of getting used to but it’s a very effective way to navigate. For instance I have learned that simple little wrist gestures are as equally affective as a three foot arm movement. Lol (it’s quite comical watching someone learn). Another thing that I’m fully impressed with is the little wand pro remote keyboard. It’s a Bluetooth powered thumb driven keyboard/mouse combo. If your familiar with where all the buttons are on a traditional keyboard you will quickly adapt to this little device. Since it’s Bluetooth you don’t have to be in the line of site to use it. Another option available is to use a traditional Bluetooth mouse and keyboard for the setup and then use the wands for operation.. I believe you are going to need to learn the wand to fully experience the Android HD in its entirety

User friendliness: I can see a few learning curbs with this device. For one, how to affectively control the wands and two where to find all the custom repositories for the xmbc media player, there is lots of information out there and hopefully some members will bring it here. If you have any experience with a smart phone or tablet, particularly and Android smart phone or tablet you will be right at home with this device. It will not be so much a matter of how to do things it will be more a matter of what the user wants and what they have to download to get it.

Internet browser: Just like the smart phones any browser is available for this device. The two big contenders are the Google chrome browser and the firefox browser. These two mentioned browsers are able to sync data from your main PC and copy all your saved bookmarks and passwords to your android device. So far I’m leaning toward the Google Chrome browser as it’s more appealing to the eye and the most similar to a regular PC.

Here's a Photo of the browser the little thing to the left of the center channel speaker is the Jynx Android HD

http://phoenix.satfix.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=16502&d=1350501486

Is it rooted: Unlike most other micro media boxes you have full administrator privileges, which gives the user the option to transform the box into whatever you can dream up.

http://phoenix.satfix.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=16500&d=1350501202

Proxy/VPN Capabilities: The Android OS is fully adaptable to all VPNs and proxies without downloading any apps or complicated configurations.

Android as a mini HTPC: I have spent years and good money after bad in my quest for the ultimate HTPC. I’ve tried nearly everything to seek the right combination of ease of use, versatility, and practicality. So far the Jynxbox Android HD is the closest thing I’ve come across that covers all the following criteria.

Almost any apk can be installed, on or off market. Check soapcast apk and sopcastx (guide for sopcast), there's even an Icefilms apk. Google Play (Android market) is working flawlessly btw...

What are the exact rules for file sharing .apk files on this forum?

If you want a very reliable and good pay streaming app checkout DroidTV. Very good app with excellent content for cheap.

Also, they've included Voodoo OTA which will root/unroot the device so you can stream from Google Movies and other pay services.

Navi-X is a good media source, it's a repository that's accessed in the programs menu instead of the video menu.

Here's the latest repository

http://code.google.com/p/navi-x/downloads/detail?name=Navi-X_v37_6.zip&can=2&q=

Put this on a usb stick an plug it into the JX Android.
To instal this repository or any other one go into systems/settings of xbmc, and select the addons tab.
Then select instal from zip and you will be prompted to find the file
It will be located in the root file system, when your there you will want to select mnt/sda1. It could read sda0-2 depending on what usb port your using, once you open that you will see the repository, select and load.

Actually... here's a little list of common unofficial repositories for xbmc..

http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Unofficial_add-on_repositories

There's something for everybody in there. Lost of different languages too.

Here's another one:

(c&p from another site)

(not sure if I can hotlink images so I didn't)

Step 3: Select “Add Source” on the Left Side of the Screen.

Step 4: Click on the text box that says <None> to open up the keyboard.

Step 7: You’ll now have a keyboard pop up, type “fusion” (without quotations) then press the “Done” button again.

Step 8: Verify that your screen appears as follows, and then press the “OK” button at the bottom in order to save the new file source.

Step 9: Your File Manager window should now look like the one below, assuming it does, you can now return to the Main Menu.

Step 17: Select the “Video Add-ons” option.

Step 18: Click the name of the plugin you wish to enable. We’re using the “1Channel plugin” for this one.

Step 19: Choose “Install” on the left side to enable the selected video addon.

Step 20: Return to the main menu, and go into the category which your addon was installed to (most likely either VIDEOS, MUSIC or PROGRAMS). In this case, we installed a Video Addon, so it’ll be in “Add-ons” under the “VIDEOS” menu. You’ll now be able to access and use the addon at your convenience.

Step 21: You’ll now want to repeat the procedure from Step 10 onwards in order to install additional repositories and addons. Repeat as necessary.

Homer,

It's been two months since you posted this. How has the box been performing?

I have a converted Nano2 and a Nano Premium SE that are giving me headaches, contantly failing to connect to the server. I am about ready to scrap them and buy something new.

Would you still recommend the JynxBox Android HD? Have you tried the JynxBox Android HD Wand Pro (Wireless Keyboard Remote)? Is it worth getting too?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have,

johnnieq

Well, I dunno if it was just me or what, but I had to completely dump XBMC Frodo and install stuff from Androidhub or XBMChub or whatever, delete a bunch of useless russian crap, which required me to hook up my keyboard to the jynxbox because doing all that crap with the wand is f***ing murder. So basically now instead of watching 1channel and icefilms on my computer, I'm watching it on my TV.
If I had to do it again, I wouldn't bother, it's a poor substitute for IKS, but the only public server I'm aware of is NextFTA or Nextbox or whatever and the guy I deal with is always sold out.

I agree with the wand part I can't stand it, and that little keyboard is a bit cumbersome as well, Ive started using a Bluetooth mouse $ keyboard instead.

From a free tvers perspective, this is a poor substitute for IKS, but from a testers perspective it rocks. One could also say that FTA boxes are a poor substitute for testing.
