Poppy day
Those 2 little words mean so much
My Dad was a veteran of WW2 and served in the Italian campaign
He was in Holland at the end of the war
He was assigned to the First Canadian Division which was attached to the British Eighth Army
A day of Remembrance
When my father was alive, we had our own day of reflection together
I moved away and we continued by telephone
Growing up he was happy to know that in school we had to memorize " In Flanders Fields "
He said I should never forget the words to that poem....and I never have
I would light a candle and recite the poem while my dad was with me
Then we carried on over the phone when I moved away
He was not big on crowds and going to the cenotaph
He always felt those displays glorified war and for that reason he refused his medals
In his last days I asked if I could send for them and he agreed only because it was me asking lol
I was always his favorite !!!
I received the medals and a description of each
I showed them to my dad and he was amazed he had received so many...I wasn't surprised at all
He told me many many war stories while I was growing up...the same ones over and over again
The last few months of his life he told different stories...the ones locked away for so many years
I just let him talk as much as he wanted although the stories were horrendous and so upsetting to me
His accounts needed to be told so I could remember them when he was gone.
I saw a man at an airshow a few years ago with a shirt on that said Ortona. I stopped him and asked if it meant
Ortona, Italy and he said yes. I said my father was there and his was also. Perhaps they knew each other and fought
shoulder to shoulder in one of the bloodiest battles of the Italian Campaign. Just before Christmas 1943
I will mark this day a little differently this year
I am going to the Cenotaph and share with my community a day of respect for those that sacrificed so much
And for so many...their lives
I will silently recite the poem
RIP and I love you Dad

Every year on Remembrance Day, i do the TV/Radio broadcast for my community, and take pride in being there and seeing our remaining veterans, each year they grow less and less.....I give thanks to all vets, and wear my poppy with great pride. here is a few words. for all veterans......

We Can’t Forget.
It’s that time of year again, when we gather at the mall
We all march proudly, beside the veterans, who gave their all
Now they have grown old, and in their twilight years
In days long gone by, they fought with no fears.
We wear our blood red poppies, and wear them with pride
Their valor we will never forget, for them we abide
Give praise to those who gave us freedom, for that we enjoy
Never forget, that man, that woman, and the young boy.
Many years have gone by, from the great wars they fought
They came from all walks of life, their courage they brought
From First nations villages, they left their loved ones dear
Fought alongside their brothers, with no fear
Those brave men and women, from all walks of life
By land, Sea, and Air. They took it in stride
Let us remember those who fell, and those who gave their lives
Their names etched in stone, memorized with great pride
So this November the 11th, please pause for a moment or two
Remember those men and women, they gave freedom to me and you
And give praise to those who are still with us, this Remembrance day
Give them peace and tranquility, for this we all pray.

JMHO...Anyone that can read that Darlin and have dry eyes is not human or has never seen the pain the vets endured..
Your Dad told you stories that we all have hidden from the light of day until that time comes..
Your Dad knew it was 'your' time to pass it on so it will not be forgotten..
God Bless him for having the courage to pass on what most of us hesitate to talk about..
You will know when and where it will be 'time' to pass those well kept secrets to those close to you,...
Thanks for sharing such an intimate time in your life with us..
God speed.... Lest We Forget..

Personally I think it's a shame that those that died for our country are remembered once a year. Such a large sacrifice should not be forgotten and should be remembered every day.
I have one word to those that sacrificed for us.
Thanks.

Something happened today that brought a tear and a smile to me at the same time..
A complete stranger with pants down to his 'crack' and a skateboard in his hands...walked up to me and asked ,in a demanding voice,if I was a veteran from the way I acted, spoke and carried myself.
I humble answered that i in fact was, expecting a tirade of how war was no good and we should be home and it was a useless waste of lives ... and all of a sudden ,with a tear in his eye...
He said 'Thanks, just thanks'.. There was no need to ask what for.. We both knew,
You see after speaking with him and a little prying...Unbeknownst to moi' . this young lad had lost his dad in one of our conflicts and his comrade vets had brought his dad home for the family.
In one of his many e-mails his dad mentioned the term most vets are familiar with and a code we lived and died by.. "No one left behind"
this young fellow just wanted to offer a kind word to one of those comrades..
I did not know his dad but that did not seem to matter to this young man..
I went away with a different view of a young man with scruffy hair and pants hung below the knees.. :) :)
Please take the time to say a personal thank you to one or more of our veterans. We may look at you with a surprised face or glance away from your stare,,but deep, deep down inside we are forever grateful and humbled by your comment.
Lest we forget..

Happy vets recognition day to all the many my brothers and sisters from all branches of service that actually are vets who served our country to protect our freedom. Semper Fi (for all my Marine buddies)!
you are never late nor early when you recognize those that put their lifes on the line so we can enjoy the gift of freedom. We should thank and appreciate each and every veteran everyday and not just on veterans Day. I myself am a veteran and I want to thank all my brothers and sisters from all branches of the service for their service, and for their many sacrifices they made to assure we all are safe and enjoy liberty and freedom.

respecting a veteran should be done on time
I did so by visiting several grave sites on sunday...not monday

Actually here in P.R. Grave sites did not open 'til today, also many of us remember this daily not once a year also this day is not just for the fallen it is also for those who got back home, like I learned from my grandfather, he got back home because friends of his didn't, lets leave this thread for positive comments, for comments address to those, like I mention elsewhere, I honored all of them daily with actions and thoughts, Satfix has always being a good home, lets keep it that way, for us, for them.

I'm of the position that EVERY day can be Rememberance Day, but the 11/11 is paramount. Thanks to all that gave all:the brave men, brave women,& service animals too.
