Hey!
I've been lurking around the forums for a long while, and decided it's about time I join an say hello to everyone!
When I read the posts that are meant to help, I get totally confused and feel like a super noob! My cable company which holds a monopoly here has just hiked my bill up sooooo high without any increase in service, and since I've been looking into FTA for a while now, I think it's time to dive in.
So I hope I can ask a few questions here instead of creating a new topic, since all my questions are very basic.
I understand I need a receiver, a dish, and a IKS subscription. Do I need anything else? Can anyone recommend a good receiver that does HD and PVR? Does menus with program listing work with FTA? I've also been looking into the IKS services, and it seems like FishTV is the best, would anyone recommend something different?
Thanks!

Welcome to satfix.
The type of receiver you are looking for can vary depending on your needs and wants. There are several threads in this section on the various HD units but personally my recommendation is a Jynxbox as it has dual tuner capabilities, plays various recorded formats, has no heat issues as others normally require the addition of some sort of cooling and has great support.
Failing needing all that the Dreamlink would be the next obvious choice.
Yes their menu have the program listings.
As for a private server there are several choices and once again this is where some serious reading is your best friend.
Now besides the equipment you mentioned if you want to receive more than one sat. then you will need a switch to go with things.
Don't be alarmed by some of the technical terms you see. Once you have done your homework you will become familiar with what is what and its purpose.
Hope this helps somewhat but as I said. There more reading you do the better understanding you will have of the various set ups and what you will need.
Cheers.

Thank you for all the replies! I honestly thought that I only had 1 satellite that I had to point my dish towards... And I also thought you just find the direction of the satellite and then keep adjusting until you get a very high signal... I think I have a lot to learn!
Can someone point me towards a good beginners thread for me to start with?
