Tuesday's earthquake struck areas including Montreal at 4:05 a.m. ET.

The quake was centred in the Gatineau region, 30 kilometres east of Buckingham, Que., according to Natural Resources Canada.

"If you're close to the epicentre, you probably would have no doubt whatsoever that it was an earthquake. You would feel shaking, possibly hear some rattling,"said seismologist Allison Bent.

She said that each year, about 200 small earthquakes typically occur in the area between Montreal and Ottawa – known as the Western Quebec Seismic Zone.

Bent said there are no immediate reports of any injuries or damage.
