DO NOT format it, that will wipe out all the drivers on the hard drive for the laptop hardware, you must have the OEM re-install disk's for the hardware before you do this.

I would take it back and get one with W7 on it, thats the easiest way to do this.

You also have to buy the W7 software if you do not have it already.

That is another option, use a multi boot option, I use Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 on one PC, as I have to troubleshoot all those platforms for customers.

That way he can go back and forth as he see's fit.

This is what I use.

I would say the best thing to do would be to show him how to use it. My father loves it, he downloads games and figured out how to use the tiles. The best part is that i get less tech questions. Give it a chance it takes more then a day to switch (still learning server 12).

Be careful on downgrading to W7 on some computers. Some manufacturers will void the warranty. HP has stated that if a computer comes with W8, then it needs to stay with W8. I have also heard that your licence for W8 allows you do downgrade to W7 for no cost.
