How does renewing donation work?

What happens when you want to renew your donation? Do you just extend the donation you already have - same donation number, port, server etc or do you have to get a whole new setup - new donation#, new server, new port etc.

Also, do you have to wait until day after donation expires or can you renew in advance and have the renewal start when the old donation expires?

I looked at a lot of posts about renewing but I couldn't find an answer to these questions.
