View Full Version : HP Mini 110-3000 ( netbook ) won't boot
Got a used Netbook for my wife , but it won't start windows , just a blinking cursor.... I'm able to get into the bios and run HDD and system tests, hours later, everything passed..... it won't let me into system recovery, when I push F11 , it just goes back to the blinking cursor.....
I have checked tons on Google , but nothing has worked...
I don't have a 4 gig usb drive to reinstall the Win. 7 Starter, or repair files, but I do have my 1 Terabyte external drive, can I partition it for a 4 gig section to use to upload whatever files are needed to fix it ( still need to download that info ) ....would it be safe to use such a large external drive for this ? what would be the best way to set this up ?
Thanks !

This is from a tech site;
'There are three options for recovering these mini notebook PCs to their original operating system image.
•Option 1 - Use the Recovery Manager program on the recovery partition on PC.
For Windows 7, turn on the power switch, press Esc key at boot followed by F11 key for the recovery menu.
For XP, press F6 key for Roxio BackOnTrack utility.
Flash drive or usb boot require these devices in bios bootup sequence. You need these drives to have an OS image on them.
there are many 3rd party utilities to do this from OS discs

I have the same netbook, about a year old, that was displaying the same problem. After a clean install of Windows 7, it worked fine for about a week before the hard drive completely bit the dust. The heat in these things is unbelievable, and the fan is the problem IMO. What I ended up doing was buying a 16GB thumb drive and installing Ubuntu on it. Unfortuately Win7 (or any flavor of Windows that I know of) cannot be installed to a USB drive. You can install Windows from the internal drive though, without USB. These are instructions I used:

It may not be exactly what you are looking for but I hope it helps.

Well there is a version of XP that will boot from a USB drive, but the USB stick has to be formatted to do so.
BPG, go to the site below, it is the Hiren's boot CD/USB down load site, and ether copy it to a CD or a boot-able USB stick.
This will create a boot-able mini-XP platform that will be running of your system ram via the CD or USB key, this will allow you to do all the troubleshooting of your internal hard drive you need to do.

Thanks Terry, but I'd like to keep the windows 7 starter on there if I can ....
To Bring Closure to the thread, I went and got an 8 gig USB drive and made it bootable using this guide:
http://www.intowindows.com/bootable-usb/
Set Mini to boot from USB .... it's installing windows again now....Windows 7 starter ... thanks for all the help along the way ...
