Well, it looks like WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) will be facing WBC interim welterweight champion Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) on May 4th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to Boxingxxx.com.

Canelo could end up on the undercard as the co-main event in this pay per view broadcast on HBO. It’s possible that the winner of the Mayweather-Guerrero and Alvarez-TBA fights will face each other in September when Mayweather is scheduled to be back in the ring again.

I never thought for a second that Mayweather would choose Alvarez because it’s still too early for that fight. Alvarez is well known among hardcore boxing fans in the United States, but casual boxing fans still know little of him because he’s only been having his fights televised in the U.S for a short period of time, and they’ve always been undercard fights rather than main event.

Alvarez is really a fighter that is still two to three years away from being a huge draw in the U.S, but obviously the soon to be 36-year-old Mayweather can’t afford to wait that long to wait that long to fight him. He has to do it soon before he gets much older.

Guerrero is going to be a tough gest for Mayweather because he’s a highly motivated fighter, and he doesn’t really know what it’s like to lose because his it’s been seven long years since Guerrero lost his only fight of his career to Gamaliel Diaz by a 12 round decision. Guerrero was beaten by Orlando Salido in November 2006, but that fight result was overturned and changed to a no contest after Saldo tested positive for a banned substance after the fight.

Guerrero is going to be throwing a lot of punches, because he knows that’s the kind of style that Mayweather has problems with. We just saw Guerrero easily beat Andre Berto, who was using the Mayweather shoulder roll defense last November.

Guerrero just overwhelmed Berto with punches and nailed him with a lot of lead left hands while Berto was leaning to the right with his shoulder roll fighting stance. Berto never made any adjustments with his defense and ended up taking a real beating. Guerrero showed that he’s not afraid to fight dirty because he was doing some holding and hitting, as well as throwing rabbit punches.

Jose Reynoso, the trainer for WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, says that they have a backup plan in case they can’t Floyd Mayweather Jr. to agree to fight on May 4th. Reynoso says that Miguel Cotto and Austin Trout are two opponents that they will be considering if Mayweather doesn’t agree to the fight.

Reynoso said to the rexxxx.com.xx “Mayweather is the in the lead, and hopefully we will be fighting him, but we’re also negotiating with other boxers to have a plan B, and those are Miguel Cotto, Austin Trout and others who might be a worthy rival to Saul.”

You can bet that Golden Boy Promotions and Alvarez will make a major push to get Cotto to agree to take the May 4th fight if Mayweather doesn’t take it.

Alvarez isn’t going to fight Austin Trout, no way on earth that’s going to happen. Trout is too quick, too tall, too mobile, too young, too talented, and too much of a legit junior middleweight for the flat-footed Alvarez to face.

Alvarez has been facing mostly welterweights since he picked up the junior middleweight title last year in a victory over a welterweight Matthew Hatton to capture the vacant WBC junior middleweight title. Alvarez isn’t going to turn around and a fight a real junior middleweight like Trout. It’s not going to happen.

The back-up plan is Cotto and Cotto only, I bet. That’s who they’ll make a big play for. It’s so easy to predict with Alvarez because he fights the same kind of opponents over and over again.

You have to wonder whether Golden Boy has seen him spar with real 154 pounders and maybe he had problems with them or something because there’s no way to explain his constantly being matched against welterweights. Alvarez’s last fight was against a light welterweight in Josesito Lopez.

I hope Alvarez and Reynoso don’t get their hopes up too much for Mayweather because I think they’re kidding themselves if they think Mayweather will agree to that fight. It’s not going to happen.

Mayweather will be fighting Robert Guerrero, because he’s the easier option. He’s not as popular as Alvarez, but Guerrero will still bring in a lot of Mexican boxing fans wanting to see him fight Mayweather. There’s no point in Mayweather taking on a bigger fighter like Alvarez when he doesn’t have to.

Good posts litolapid... Guerrero and Floyd seem logical... Guerrero would be all over Floyd..
Floyd would have to move and counter... would be interesting... big money would be on Floyd of course.
Canelo would be on the undercard to fight "a boxer to be named later" Cotto? hope not. Cotto just had a tough fight.
Would love to see Canelo and Trout... that would be very good...
Trout is married to a latina... and speaks spanish.... he was yelling "yo te quiero a ti Canelo!!! tu sigues"
He from Las Cruces NM,,,, a skip, hop and a jump from El Paso TX where yers truly was born."

Guerrero is like most Paisano fighters a warrior...But he is too slow and will never catch PBF... Why doesnt he fight Canelo???.. Canelo will put a whooping on him... Hopefuly they do make that fight ( which I doubt) and doesnt chicken out...........

Feel Guerrero's style will give PBF more of a hard time than Canelo. Guerrero's sticky way of fighting with all his dirty tricks will kind of make Floyd go hard on him and try to ko him early in the fight. With Canelo he'll play defense for a while and take him round by round. Querrero will be a bloody mess with his counter punching, remember Floyd will be big for this one. Canelo is slow and should not give him any problems at all. Since Pacquiao's Skyfall, not much competition for PBF in the scene. Cept, Danny Garcia, he can probably give them all hell if he so decides to go up in weight. jmo

Good analysis Blackie. I agree Canelo is a straight in fighter easy to counter. Floyd very good with those type of
boxers... Guerrero comes from all angles... hit you in the knees, in the huevos, neck,,, whatever is handy.
I don't think Floyd likes this kinda fighter...
Canelo though is a devastating body puncher... if he could slow Floyd down a bit and hit him with body shots
that might make a difference..
Canelo and Floyd have one thing in common... they both fight once a year, so if they dont do it in May,,, look
for them in 2014.
I would take Floyd over the Mexican though. Doubt it will happen.

I think we all agree with you Kid... I really don't think Floyd would want any part of
Garcia if Garcia could put on some weight... but still Floyd would be much bigger.

Has anyone heard from Gamer? Haven't seen a post from him lately... You ok amigo Gamer?
