Top 5 Boxing stories of 2012Boxing had one of its best years in a long time in 2012, as it returned to network television, regularly attracted very large crowds, had several massive pay-per-view shows and welcomed several new stars. The news wasn't all good, though. Its biggest star went to jail for a few months, its second-best was knocked cold and lost two in a row and everywhere, it seemed, fighters were testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs. The sport lost some of its best and brightest, with boxers such as Johnny Tapia, Corrie Sanders and Hector Camacho dying way too young. Here are the five boxing stories in 2012: — By Kevin Iole
The U.S. Olympic men's boxing team won zero medals
In the worst performance ever by a U.S. Olympic men's boxing team, the Americans were shut out of the medals and put up a combined record of 4-10. Two of those wins came by one man, welterweight Errol Spence. The bright spot for the Americans was that middleweight Claressa Shields won the gold in the first-ever women's competition. Boxing plagued by performance-enhancing drug woes
Several of the sport's big names failed drug tests. Lamont Peterson had an elevated testosterone ratio, and his bout with Amir Khan was canceled. Erik Morales tested positive for clenbuterol, but was allowed to fight Danny Garcia anyway. Antonio Tarver tested positive following a bout with Lateef Kayode and was yanked from his announcer's post on Showtime.
Juan Manuel Marquez knocks out Manny Pacquiao
The Mexican star believed he won each of their first three bouts, in 2004, 2008 and 2011. All he got for his trouble was a draw, a split-decision loss and a majority-decision loss. In the fourth fight on Dec. 8 in Las Vegas, Marquez vowed to fight more aggressively. He did so and knocked out Pacquiao in dramatic fashion at the end of the sixth round.
Timothy Bradley's controversial win over Manny Pacquiao
Virtually everyone who saw Pacquiao fight Timothy Bradley in Las Vegas on June 9 believed Pacquiao won. Judges Duane Ford, Jerry Roth and C.J. Ross, though, believed otherwise and gave the win to Bradley. That prompted outrage and cries of a fix. The WBO, which sanctioned the fight, commissioned a review and determined Pacquiao won. Promoter Bob Arum asked the Nevada attorney general to ... more
Floyd Mayweather goes to jail
In January, Mayweather successfully petitioned a Las Vegas judge to allow him to delay a jail sentence so that he could fight Miguel Cotto in May. The judge granted his wish, but after beating Cotto, Mayweather was incarcerated on June 1. He spent 57 days in jail, complaining about the food at one point, before his release.
