Hello gang, have 2 USB to serial cables and both are a pain in the_______. 1 is r@dio sh@ck sometimes it works sometimes I have to re install the driver 56 times and then it works bought a new one blue color because it has the right chip for the job, YEAH RIGHT bull, I had to install the driver daily for 45 days until it worked on XP, then installed it for a million years daily for Vista to finally have it work and now on my Daughter's laptop Windows 7 I have being installing it for 3 trillion years before Christ and before Dinosaurs and still doesn't work. None of them R@dio Sh@ck nor the blue one.
Just in case one uses 260-0183 driver the other one uses pl2303 and it came with a disk. Thanks Turbo
Sorry bud, but not really much info other than you must be Very Old! lol.....
What happens when you have to reinstall the driver , Why, I mean ? does it happen when you restart ? Are you only installing the driver files , or are you running the .exe / setup file/s

Thanks for the info, can you show me what you are talking about? Photo or dead link of this equipment you mention? Thanks.
BPG lol just 38 may 7 74, OK since I am not that techy but let me say what I have done, the r@dio sh@ck cable was given to me by a good friend before passing to a better life, with that cable there was atmega's card readers wish I have no clue how to use, but he mention the disk of the driver is no where to be found, but driver is available at r@dio sh@ck web site, and I found it, 260-0183
http://support.radioshack.com/soft.htm
Then someone told me to get adifferent usb to serial with a chip wish it will make the cable the best of all, so I got this one with tiny disk in it with drivers for windows 98 all the way to 7, pl2383
Disk info is from this site

Is this what you are talking about? It looks it needs driver to, and the driver for this type of hardware is what causing problems to install, most of the time I install the driver following the manual instructions, then when I plug the usb to serial cable I get the message, new hardware found, searching for driver, I can do the search manually and still get message driver not found, disk installed in the cd rom and all, google some info on how to solve the problem and it solves it for the moment, then next time I need to use the cable the problem again, yesterday I needed to load a Captive Works 650 with Factory Firmware and took me 7 hours to finally have the cable installed and ready to load file to STB, STB finish the loading in 3 minutes, but 7 hours to have the cable ready to use is kind of wasting time and days, I need an installation ready, so that every time I install the cable it is ready to be used not struggle 7 hours to have it ready, thanks Turbo

After you install sometimes they will not always use port #1 , instead try port # 3

Check your device manager for hardware conflicts... If you have any try updating the driver automatically to resolve your hardware conflict.

You are definitely having COM Port issues. You need to go to Device Manager>COM Ports and list what is there. You may have some virtual ports. You may have to assign them a different port and when you plug in the Prolific (blue) assign it to COM1. Turn off System Restore, install the driver, re-boot and turn System Restore back on. When you plug it in, it should always be COM 1
