can you use a laptop on wifi with cable to next box or does it have to be network cabled to modem for reception on public ? thanks

If your laptop has XP on it then all you do is bridge the WIFI card and the network LAN connection, the laptop will then act as a network bridge, the laptop should be set to be on alt all times, that is, no sleep mode or no hard drives going to sleep. Here is a video on how to do this.
