Here's a video from after the 2013 edition of the Royal Rumble last night.
Following his victory last night against CM Punk, the longest reigning WWE Champion of the last twenty-plus years, the new WWE Champion returned to the ring after the pay-per-view went off the air to address the crowd before they went home.
It is, after all, what anyone who lays claim to the name "The People's Champion" should do. A fan in attendance was kind enough to put their video of The Rock's speech up on YouTube for all of "the People" to see.
Here's a transcript of The Rock's speech:
You got the referee coming out here telling me I need to position myself to get the proper shot of me and the WrestleMania sign. But what he doesn't understand is: I'm talking to Phoenix!
It has been ten long years. Came back to do something special. Ten long years. Came back to do something special.
I wanna thank the WWE superstars because it is one hell of a team effort putting on a night like tonight.
I want to thank the family who was here. I love you, thank you.
And above all else, and I mean this, because this is very real to me, I want to thank each and every one of you [The Rock gestures to the crowd], thank you!
It feels good to do this and make history as WWE Champion: If you smell....what The Rock...Is....Cookin'!
The Rock still knows how to hold a crowd in the palm of his hand, and moments such as this once again reassure me that The Rock is here out of his love for wrestling and his audience, and not for the money. Anything that does not get televised has relatively little commercial value, as it does not really promote The Rock's brand or WWE to any major degree, despite grainy videos such as this one giving this moment a wider audience.
I think I prefer The Rock's un-televised speeches because he does not try as hard to get topics trending on Twitter, and it makes a huge difference. It is also something of a plus to see a show ending with someone other than CM Punk or John Cena for a change. I love both men, but variety is the spice of life.
