Team Hell No have been on top and dominated for so long it’s hard to remember what they’re like without the belts. But at some point they’re going to lose.
With the tag team scene withering, who will be champions next?
The unlikely duo of Kane and Daniel Bryan has held the WWE Tag Team championship since Sept. 16. In their time on top, the tag team division flourished. Suddenly, there was a burst of new teams all vying for the title shot.
With teams like Usos, Primo and Epico, The Prime Time Players, Sin Cara and Rey Mysterio and Team Rhodes Scholars, the division was so full there was a tournament to decide the new No. 1 contenders.
But now the tournament is over, the No. 1 contenders have been beaten and Team Hell No is still on top. But for how long? Even long-reigning champs Demolition and Mr. Fuji and Professor Tanaka fell from their perch.
With each passing week of Team Hell No’s reign, the WWE seems to be losing interest in the division again.
Team Rhodes Scholars seemed like a sure bet to be the next champions. Damien Sandow and Cody Rhodes complemented each other well and drew heat from the crowd.
They lost both of their title shots and several singles matches to Kane and Bryan. Then, suddenly, they were split.
The Prime Time Players also complement each other well. Darren Young and Titus O’Neil are brash and cocky, with just enough humor thrown in for their act not to get stale.
They’re not over yet as serious, dominant heels. But capturing the titles, plus the winning streak that would come with it, would be great for them as a team and future stars. But now they too may be split up and sent their separate ways.
Cara and Mysterio are barely able to keep any momentum. But realistically, can a smaller team consistently beat bigger and tougher teams and do so long enough to keep fans interested?
If fans don’t buy into the story, and don’t buy into them being a serious tag team, they’ll turn away like they did with the Divas Division.
That leaves the Uso’s and Primo and Epico as the only other active tag teams. Both teams would benefit from a run, but have struggled to find time on TV other than in backstage skits.
It’s hard to believe the WWE would put the belts on a low-profile team unless they wanted the belts swept under the rug, too. The championship doesn’t make the wrestler; the wrestler makes the championship.
Bryan is scheduled to appear in the Elimination Chamber along with Mysterio and Randy Orton, so far. No tag team title bout is booked. What if Bryan wins and goes on to WrestleMania? What would happen with Team Hell No?
If the tag team division were deeper, than they would lose the titles somehow. But no teams are ready to take the belts. Without challengers, the belts will stay where they are.
What is needed are fresh teams that will get the fans attention. The growing alliance between Tensai and Brodus Clay opens the possibility of the two teaming. Joining forces worked for Sandow and Rhodes, why couldn’t it work for these two?
With a bit of attitude, Tensai and Clay could be one monster of a team and be enough to dethrone the champs.
Team Hell No brought a refreshing change to the division and made tag team wrestling exciting again. But now it looks like the WWE has lost interest in change.
