It’s a given the title bout rematch between The Rock and CM Punk will main event the 2013 Elimination Chamber. But given the nature of the pay-per-view, should the title be defended inside the Chamber itself?
The two men are, after all, fighting over the WWE’s biggest prize.
Rock’s victory over Punk at the Royal Rumble was a done deal before the bout even took place. News leaked across the Web about Rock’s wrestling schedule and WWE’s plans for him all the way up to WrestleMania.
Unsurprisingly, the two will face off again at the Elimination Chamber event. After all, Punk gets a rematch for the belt.
While not every bout on the card should be inside the Chamber, only one Chamber match is scheduled. That match is a No. 1 contender's bout for the World Heavyweight championship.
It’s anti-climatic for the only Chamber match on the entire card to not even have the possibility of a new champion being crowned. Shouldn’t the organization's top title be defended inside the steel contraption?
In 2010, John Cena defended the WWE championship inside the Chamber. In 2012, Punk did the same thing.
In 2011, yes, the WWE title was defended in a singles match but the World title was defended in the Chamber. At least one of the two major singles championships were on the line.
The WWE’s main title needs to be the most sought-after and hardest title to win. What could be harder than the Elimination Chamber?
Granted, there would need to be four other guys. And that’s where things don’t quite work.
First, this would be unfair to Punk. He deserves a one-on-one match with Rock. But if the WWE did it anyway it would do wonders to further his "lack of respect" storyline. This would make it very easy to have a triple threat match at WrestleMania between Rock, Punk and Cena.
Second, if the WWE title were inside the Chamber, who else would be there? Cena would have to be included but, if he were, what then was the point of him winning the Rumble?
It would seem like a waste to have Cena win the title shot at WrestleMania, only to have one handed to him the month before the year’s biggest event.
Rock and Punk will put on another great match, cage or no. But at a pay-per-view called Elimination Chamber, the namesake match should be for the biggest prize of them all.
