I think that I have the computer end done correctly but I need help at the other end. Supposing that my computer edits are correct(opened client with wizard and filled in correctly(I hope) networking numbers what do I do next to get the receiver working? Please give me a step by step approach as this is entirely new to me. What else do I need installed?Any and all help gratefully appreciated..:D

If the computer end is done correctly you can run xx-client now and it will indicate: successfully connected to server and login successful and it will sit waiting indicating: waiting for requests. This means the server stuff is setup right and that you don't have a # at the front of your server info... lol. Then it waits for the stb to initiate communications. Ps. xx version is now at 2.3. Don't have a max so don't know exactly the rest of your setup.

Dishfish-what kind of cable would I need to connect the computer to the receiver-a 9 pin straight through serial cable or a 9 pin null modem cable? The receiver is in the livingroom and the computer is in the bedroom. If I were to run a serial cable to them I would need about 25-30 feet. The only cable connecting the two right now is cat 5 from my modem to the receiver(Right now I am using an xfta dongle-which I intend to get rid of). Somehow I don't think that is the correct cable.......

you would need an adapter too change the serial to null
or change the 2 pinouts on the serial...they crossover

Thanks Dishuser-I thought that I might need a null modem cable. If you program a viewsat max via cable it is a null modem but I wanted to be sure.So instead of getting an adapter or changing the pins on a serial I will just buy a 25' null cable right off the bat....Thanks all.....

I could be wrong but null to serial is what I think is used

I intend to use the cable to connect my computer to my viewsat HD Max using Teks Windows Wfemu v1.45(or newer). Would this application be ok using a null modem cable or would you still recommend using a null to serial cable? What is the differnce between a null cable and a null to serial cable?
Thanks

Null is a type of crossover serial cable I believe. Pins 2 and 3 crossover and 5 is straight thru to 5. The other pins don't matter for this connection. I'm not sure of max distance. Wikipedia would explain null vs straight thru and serial vs parallel I'm sure and google serial cable distance. Don't know about wfemu, I think you just load your stb with wf bin 110805, check vs max files section.

why would you use teks stuff???
xx-client is very simple and uses less resources...no com0com needed or anything.
the latest release ends in .880
and yes null is what you need.
you can get null to r45 adapters that are sold in pairs and use cat5 cable to make the connection.
very smooth, clean and simple set up.

I actually have xx-client on my harddrive(version 2) I briefly checked it out and it seems (at least version 2)to be a lot simpler than even earlier versions of xx-client. With Tek's I couldn't find 2 files so by default I probably will use version 2.
