On May 11 in Glasgow, Scotland, WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns will put his belt on the line against undefeated Puerto Rican contender Jose Gonzales. The Scottish Burns will be defending his title before an enthusiastic home crowd.
This is a classic matchup between a rising star with explosive potential and a crafty veteran who knows what it takes to win on the big stage. With Adrien Broner jumping to welterweight next month, Burns should be viewed as the top fighter in the world right now at 135. He's coming off a Round 4 TKO of the big-hitting Kevin Mitchell, quite possibly the finest performance of his career to date.
The fight will be broadcast in the United Kingdom on Sky.

Can't believe this, Gonzales was winning the fight and didn't come out in the 10th round and lost by tko. No beans in PR, people are eating hamburgers at BK.
It was a fracture hand that made him quit the fighting.

GLASGOW, Scotland -- Ricky Burns kept his WBO lightweight belt when unbeaten challenger Jose Gonzalez of Puerto Rico retired after the ninth round on Saturday.
Rafael: Burns lucky in title defense

http://a.espncdn.com/i/columnists/rafael_dan_m.jpgAfter being schooled for most of his lightweight title defense, Ricky Burns was fortunate to retain his belt, writes Dan Rafael.

Gonzalez, the winner of 22 fights, 17 by knockout, stayed on his stool because of a suspected broken wrist.
Burns (36-2, 11 KO) started better but Gonzalez troubled the champion in the sixth round and a brutal seventh, subduing the partisan crowd. Gonzalez was hesitant in the ninth, and though he quit afterward, he led on the judges' scorecards.
"I knew the rounds were close. The judges had me behind," Burns said. "I couldn't believe how awkward he is. I take my hat off to him. He is a class, class opponent. He's very hard to hit."
