What box one buys depends on what you want to do in the hobby. If stealing provider's signals, you want one type of box. If doing true FTA, you might want another. If you want to get all the channels you can legally, you want a box that does SD and HD, with both DVB-S and DVB-S2 capable tuners. Older boxes still do a lot of channels whether you are doing true FTA or not, but the trend is that uplinks are going to DVB-S2 and providers are going to go with a turboFEC system that many boxes can not do.

So, not knowing what you want, hard to say what you should get. And that is just concidering the TV side of satellite hobby.
