Broner: I don't want to beat Mayweather

Adrien Broner admits that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is his role model. He regularly calls Mayweather "big bro," asks the pound-for-pound ace for advice and is exceedingly humble (for him) in admitting that Mayweather is boxing's top dog (for now anyway).

But Broner has also told the world that he sees himself as the sport's driver in the near future. To be the man, it makes sense for him to beat the man, right?

A Mayweather-Broner fight has been discussed in barrooms and chat rooms for a couple of years, but the issue becomes more salient now that Broner has leaped from 135 pounds to 147 pounds -- Mayweather territory. But Broner shut down the possibility of a Mayweather clash when asked at a Tuesday media gathering at Gleason's Gym in Dumbo, N.Y., ahead of Saturday's card, topped by a fight between Broner and welterweight titlist and Brooklyn native Paulie Malignaggi.

"My big brother got his legacy, I got mine," Broner said. "I want to see him retire undefeated. I don't want to hand him a loss."

But I do recall Broner having declared he wants to gross a billion dollars when all is said and done. It's a given that a fight with Mayweather would bring him $10 million dollars or so closer to that goal. That doesn't entice him.

"It's not about money," Broner declared. "I ain't hungry, I'm fine."

Both Broner and Mayweather will contradict themselves, a stance they took in days past, and leave fans and naysayers alike puzzling it out, trying to decipher their words and actions.

Broner is a good fighter and a work in progress.
It's to bad he is so damn cocky and not in a good way(see Mayweather).
The talent is there but might lose it hanging in Vegas and all.
Wish Malignaggi could school him but that won't be the casa.
Love the magic mans enthusiasm and heart but not a big puncher and that will lead to Broner wearing him down.
I can see Paulie getting ko'd.

You herd it from the man! He's careful about what he says, PBF still the master, he's willing to wait. Now , is not the same having an little guy in front of you, than a 157pound moving target slapping you with a jab in the face all night long. I guess Paulie is thinking about that seriously, weather it would work or not, will have to wait and see. Personally I could care less who wins but if it was Floyd the guy in front of him, then I would bet on him. jmo

I think Al Haymon is one of the smartest Marrahabbas out there.
He got alot of pull but not the way Paulie makes it sound.
First of all he would not waste his time because of so much belief in Broner, second and foremost big Al does not back up just anyone.
Malignaggi was out of picture and then poof, he is back but not to the point of the article(to me thats crazy).
Anyway money talks and , yeah you know the rest.
Its unfortunate but freakin' reality.

Broner has been blessed by Haymon to leave a division and face a welterweight champ. Most fighters face a ranked fighter then go up to fight for the belt. That being said, we can think there's favoritism all over this match. The same favoritism we've seen in the past with Manny and Floyd, in other words Title made events. It's happening in boxing more often than anyone think, the rankings are just in paper. In this one they just camouflaged the scheme by using Barclay Center as the scenario. Home of the Italians at Brooklyn.

Very true... That is the reason Mayweather has been so unpopular.... Just because of the type of person he is... I will not be shocked if and when he retires he will blow all his money away on his "posse".. Then make a comeback at 45...LMAO.....

Floyd, the real thing, not the (copy cat). Paulie told him that, "You're NOT Floyd Mayweather"!!!!
They somehow look alike, as all brothers do but there's only one great undefeated pugilist who amongst his répertoire
is the great Canadian Arturo Gatii and Mexican American Diego Chico Corrales.

I was at this fight and let me tell you Floyd's speed was insane.
Arturo did not see three quarters of the punches.
Even worst was the sound when he landed them cause sometimes we would not see the shots ourselves.
Just wow
