Daniel Bryan’s run to the WWE Championship is about to get started.
Just a few weeks ago, it was reported by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (via WrestlingInc.com) that Bryan would be facing John Cena for the title in the main event of the upcoming Money in the Bank pay-per-view. Thus, there was some disappointment among the fans when Mark Henry got that spot instead, even despite Henry’s epic “retirement” speech on last week’s Raw.
There’s no reason to worry about Bryan, though. He may not be challenging Cena at Money in the Bank, but he is about to embark on a journey that will eventually take him to the WWE title.
That journey will start in just a few weeks at Money in the Bank.
It was revealed on this week’s Raw that Bryan would be one of seven competitors in an absolutely loaded Money in the Bank match, and the winner can cash in the briefcase for a WWE Championship match at any point over the next year.
Bryan’s competition in that match will be very tough. His six opponents? Kane, Randy Orton, CM Punk, Christian, Sheamus and the returning Rob Van Dam.
In theory, there’s a case to be made for every single one of those stars winning the Money in the Bank match and going on to become the WWE champion.
But in reality, only one man should win it: Daniel Bryan.
Bryan doesn’t need to win the Money in the Bank match to be taken seriously as a WWE Championship contender. Then again, neither does anyone else in this match.
Every single competitor in this match is a former world champion, and each one of them could be taken seriously as a main eventer right now.
No one is hotter than Bryan, however.
Bryan has evolved into the hottest act in pro wrestling, and now he’s oh so close to winning the most prestigious title in the WWE. He just needs one final push to get him there, and that push should be ignited with a Money in the Bank win.
Bryan is the one Superstar fans are begging to see get a chance to hold the WWE Championship. After all, other than Christian, he’s the only participant in this bout who’s never held that title.
He’s the most over guy in this match, which is really saying a lot when you consider how over Orton and Punk are and how over RVD is likely to be upon his return.
This isn’t about Orton, Punk, RVD or anyone else in this match, though. This match is about Bryan.
He’s on such a roll right now and has been over the last few months. In fact, he just did the unthinkable by making Orton—arguably the second most over guy in the WWE right now—tap out cleanly in the main event of Monday Night Raw.
That was a huge vote of confidence for Bryan from creative, but it was really just the next logical step in Bryan’s ascension to the top of the WWE.
The next step after that? Winning Money in the Bank.
It’s extremely rare for a talent to get over to the level that Bryan has reached in recent months, so it’s absolutely imperative WWE capitalizes on that with another MITB win for him.
Bryan generates massive reactions for anything he does these days. Just imagine the reaction he would get if he won a Money in the Bank match that is among the most star-studded MITB matches in history.
Instantly, Bryan’s credibility would go up, and, perhaps more importantly, he’d be one step closer to Cena and the WWE Championship.
In fact, having Bryan win the MITB match and then cash in (likely in advance) on Cena at SummerSlam seems to be the WWE’s plan right now. Though that may change, that’s the route the company should take.
Bryan is the one who is most deserving of a Money in the Bank win. Whether he cashes in on Cena or someone else isn’t as important.
The most important thing is that Bryan wins at Money in the Bank and earns that coveted briefcase—a briefcase that will officially begin his journey to the WWE Championship.
