I bet many of you watched the Anderson Silva - Chris Weidman UFC 162 main header. You probably also read B/R's (Bleacher Report) prediction they claimed "you can take (it) to the bank" - that Silva wins by KO in the 2nd round.
How did you feel when Weidman snapped a left hook that crumpled the Middleweight Champion flat on his back and then followed it with a crushing right straight to the chin as the referee rushed to save the fallen champ?
It felt weird as many of us anticipated Silva's supremacy based upon his unbeaten record. We were used to the clowning and taunting because he usually followed it up with lightning fast combinations that were most accurate and deadly. (Sounds familiar? Think PBF or Broner.) We hold up champions as if they are gods or immortal beings and when they are knocked out cold, we stare in disbelief and conjure up excuses, alibis, and even suspicions.
"Fixed. He threw the fight. He's done. He's tired. He's in a decline." They are just some of the tweets about the outcome. "But he just signed a 10-fight deal with Dana!" some wrote in his defence.
Which brings me to the upcoming boxing events in 2013 and 2014. Could the same thing happen to Boy Floyd, who hyped that he doesn't know Silva? (Who in the world of sports do not know the former Middleweight champ?) Could this be a premonition of things to come? What about Danny Garcia?
One thing is certain. http://cdn.bleacherreport.net/images_root/slides/photos/003/247/191/hi-res-7484302_crop_650x440.jpg?1373099826
(And what did you think of the kissing scene at the weigh in?)
No one is invincible. Not Mayweather. Not even The Greatest (Ali). Sooner, if not later, someone will come along to humble one to submission and defeat, deflating our loftiest expectations.
Funny, the beer and nachos taste the same no matter what. Pass the ketchup!
