router question

is it possible to hook up the viewsat to a router (this is a Motorola router with no serial connection like x-fta...only has ethernet connections) running dd-wrt and xx-client with some kind of serial-to-ethernet cable? Or will only serial-to-usb work?

Well the modded file for rq-sssp in the vs uses serial output from the box, so if your router does not have serial port, you can't get the data in. Don't see how a serial to ethernet dongle would really help you any--that is what the router is there for , and if you don't have usb port a serial to usb adapter would be rather pointless too. Now the data you need to get into the box is not very big, you could setup some other way of getting it into the router if you know your programming, but a router that would do the job is pretty cheap.

Most routers have a TTL header inside. You have to put your own TTL To Serial adapter on.

You'll have to check if a certain router can run dd-wrt or OpenWRT. Any router that can run a 3rd party firmware can be made to work. It is just easier if the router has a USB port and I only push the tl-wr703n because it is cheap, VERY small and is known to work well.

Besides I can only personally support a handful of routers, mainly I have chosen tl-wr703n and the wrt54g. I only have two hands lol ;)

You'll want to use the "Webflash image for first installation" image. You just flash it from the tp-link web interface.

After you get the router and flash it for the first time, PM me....I may have a surprise for you ;)

Need a little help please. Been trying to get viewsat ultra going
with router based rq-sssp-client-broadcom. Did successfully get it running
with windows based version, so I think the right software is on the box; coolsat protocol selected.
Router I have is wrt54gv2 with openwrt firmware. I can get as far as Server connected,
Client Ready - waiting for requests. Tried to connect ttl outputs direct
to null modem cable; did not figure that would work; so I got me a ttl to rs232
adapter from nkcelectronics. rx/tx led's light occasionally but I can't establish
any communications. Pretty sure correct comport selected /dev/tts/1.
Also I have null modem adapter that i've tried so tx/rx mixup should not be an issue.
nkcelectronics.com is their website in the breakout section; I got the one with the male DB9;
you can view the schematic once you click on the board picture if that's any help.
Also tried wrt54glv1.1 with both rq-sssp-client & xx-client; same results.
I'm powering the board with the 3.3 volts on the ttl header inside router.
Any assistance anyone can lend; will be much appreciated.
