FRUITLAND PARK, Fla. -- An 80-year-old man apparently shot and killed his wife and himself while telling a 911 dispatcher that they wanted to commit suicide because of their failing health, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office.
A man called 911 from a Fruitland Park home at about 7:45 a.m. Monday.
"She's bed-ridden and can't do (anything), and my back went out today. I can't pick her up. I can't even bend over," the 911 caller said. "We want to go alone -- together."
While the dispatcher was talking to the man, she heard what appeared to be two gunshots, the Sheriff's Office said.
Prior to hearing the apparent shots, the dispatcher had sent deputies to the home, where two bodies were discovered, the Sheriff's Office said.
The bodies were identified as Russell Dorner and his wife, Laura Dorner, 79.
Lake County sheriff's detectives believe the deaths were the result of a murder-suicide.
A gun was located at the scene and the Russel Dorner's body was found with a telephone receiver nearby, deputies said.
