Almost every culture has an established rite of passage to enter manhood. For instance, teens in the Maasai tribe of Africa aren't considered men until they've killed a lion. Here in the U.S. many consider your first driver's license, which is almost just like killing a lion, to be an important step towards adulthood.
But if you happen to be Jewish, your entry into all the rights and privileges of manhood comes in the form of your Bar Mitzvah. You enter the temple that day a child but you leave as a man. And if you're Sam Horowitz of Dallas, you leave as a man with a ridiculously elaborate and expensive burlesque performance on your immediate agenda.
