Is it possible to force dreamlink hd to record in 720p even if the chan is broadcasting in 1080i?

That's a really good question. it seems to me that no matter what display you use to record the dl. If you set output to 720p, it'll play 720p and if you set it to 1080i, it will output 1080i regardless of how it's recorded.

I'd say about 95% of the hd channels on broadcast are in 1080i with the other 5% in 720P. The only ones that come to mind for 720P are Abc/Espn, Fox and cartoon hd. (as far as south goes). I think everything else is 1080i. As far as hd goes

No one (Dish or BEV) is broadcasting in 1080i (or P) they do not have the transponder bandwidth to do so, they have way too many HD channels on the transponders as is, the receiver is up-converting or just displaying that it's in 1080i.

If all the HD channels on a standard 32 MHz wide transponder started broadcasting in true 1080i, it would be like tying to put 15 pounds of poop into a 5 pond bag.

To do true 1080i or 1080P on all the channels on the current satellite transponder bandwidths, they would have to switch to 16PSK or 32PSK modulation, this would require new Dish or BEV receivers, not going to happen anytime soon.

Or they would have to petition the FCC to allow wider transponder bandwidths on new satellites with a bigger Ku band spectrum, that's possible, but they would have to totally replace the current satellite fleet with new birds and all new receivers, not going to happen anytime soon.

They currently have about 9 channels on one HD transponder, and they are in 720P, using 8PSK with turbo FEC codes, they would loose about 1/2 the stations on the transponder to get 1080i programming, to get them back up they would need more transponders.

Now OTA stations are a different subject, they can do one maybe two 1080i programs, or four 720P programs on one TV channel.

so based on what you are saying, the answer to the o.p's question doesn't matter because its all upconverted.

To your points on resolution. So that people don't get confused, I think that you are referring to native resolution. Which is different than output. Is that safe to say?

Also, if sat providers are not broadcasting true 1080i or 720p resolution and its simply just upconverted, what resolution is it being upconverted from?

I always thought ota broadcast were true uncompressed lossless (if you will) 1080i and 720p broadcast. Is that not true?

Native resolution is associated with the LCD or LED monitor or HDTV set, not with the receiver supplying or outputting the HD signal to the monitor or HDTV.

The satellites are only transmitting HD in 720P, the receiver has to up-convert it to a higher format if you want 1080i.

The only channels I find in true 1080i are on 125W, and those are the PBS feeds.

I have to respectfully disagree.

How do you know that the channels on 125W are "true" 1080I?

Based on what I know (and I am not 100% certain) satellite does transmit hd in 720 p and 1080i. They just use compression in order to get enough bandwith to broadcast it in 1080i and 720p.

After all, sat/cable/ota broadcast is essentially the only place where 1080i is broadcasted.....if sat/cable/ota aren't really broadcasting 1080i then who is?

Upconversion and compression are two different things. Just because a broadcast is compressed doesn't mean its being upconverted.

Is it the best quality 1080i or 720p? No. For that you'd have to use ota. But that doesn't mean its not 1080i or 720p.

The two HD PBS feeds on 125W transponder 12180 V are in 1080i according to PBS engineering, also my new receiver matches this information (1920x1080), they have 2 channels in HD 1080i, PBS East and PBS West, they also have a bit of room left for 3 SD channels (544x480) on one, all the channels on this TP are in 8PSK MPEG4, so they have a bit of room for these channels.

They can put 4 HD channels at 1080 if they want, but only need the two feeds in HD.

1080i does not equal 1980x1080
1080i equals 1980 x 540
