Hopkins says he can make 160 for Mayweather fight
October 27th, 2013 |
Dan Ambrose: Moments after his one-sided 12 round unanimous decision victory over Karo Murat (25-2-1, 15 KO’s) on Saturday night, IBF light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (54-6-2, 32 KO’s) told Showtime interviewer Jim Gray that he can make 160 lbs. for a bout against Floyd Mayweather Jr. if he’s serious about wanting the fight.

Hopkins said “I can make 160. If the negotiations are serious, I can make 160.”

What negotiations are Hopkins talking about? Mayweather hasn’t said a word about wanting to fight the 48-year-old Hopkins at 160 or at all period. This is all Hopkins acting as a promoter in talking about the fight.

Sure, it’s possible that Mayweather might show interest in fighting Hopkins, but thus far he hasn’t said a word about wanting the fight. That’s not stopping Hopkins from talking about the Mayweather fight. I guess if you repeat something long enough people will start to believe it and want the fight, but right now I don’t think there’s a great deal of interest in a Hopkins-Mayweather fight by the boxing public.

Hopkins seemed to be making an excuse after tonight’s fight for him not going after unification bouts WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson and WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev by saying that he understands the Showtime/HBO war won’t allow a fight between him and them. How convenient for Hopkins because he wouldn’t stand a chance against either of those guys. If that had been Stevenson or Kovalev in the ring tonight instead of Murat, Hopkins would have been in for a world of hurt and I think he would have been knocked out or beaten by a lopsided decision. By Hopkins saying that a fight between him and the other champions likely won’t happen due to the HBO/Showtime feud, it means that Hopkins doesn’t have to face the two best fighters at 175. If you take away Stevenson and Kovalev, that leaves the likes of Beibut Shumenov, Tony Bellew and Nathan Cleverly. Those are all guys that Hopkins would have a good chance of beating.

As for Hopkins getting a fight against Mayweather, I don’t see it happening. Hopkins can keep mentioning Mayweather’s name but it just looks like he’s chasing Mayweather for a fight. Robert Guerrero and Amir Khan have chased Mayweather and it paid off for Guerrero, and it’s likely to pay off for Khan. However. those guys fight in the same division as Mayweather. It’s not as if Mayweather has to move up two divisions to fight them. To fight Hopkins, Mayweather would have to move up to middleweight to take the fight.

What do you guys think about this fight?
Is there any chance of this happening?
It has the making of all greatness but would Floyd put his 0 on the line?
I doubt it.

No dice... Hopkins would rehydrate to 180 in a day and a half.
Also think it would be a boring fight.
No way would Floyd do this.. what really has he to
gain by fighting an old man..

yup, agree with you 100% Rudee! Besides, they all belong to the same stable; they are friends. It would be a circus worse than a choreographed WWE.

Well put gents! Hopkins will do anything for money..
I have a better idea, why doesn't he balloon up to 200 lb plus
and fight a Klitscho????
Ha ha ha!!!
Hopkins would go deaf and dumb on this one.

Don't have to go that far, fight Ward. It's just that Floyd will produce a better check. Old age wisdom!

Ha ha ha!!! got to be honest withya Fib... Hopkins might just beat Ward!!!
Ward has not really impressed me... plus he fights once every 2 years...
How he has not been stripped of his title is beyond me...
Making money announcing, so why fight?
Ward should fight the Canadian light heavy champ... forgot his name.
I would take the Canadian.

I totally agree with you Rudee.
I think Hopkins would outwit Ward and make him look awfull.
That would be a great fight;Ward vs Stevenson.
Stevenson has already mentioned his name when he was competing as a supermiddleweight.
Ward pratically said that he wanted nothing to do with Stevenson(not proven etc etc).
Why not now?

Thanks Bonzo... Stephenson is right. I think Stephenson would knock Ward out.
And yes,,, I do believe Hopkins would make a monkey outta Ward.
As long as he didn't trade punches with him like he did on saturday.
How the hell a guy can keep a championship without fighting for over a year
is just beyond comprehension... In my day, a champ would fight 3 times a year.
But, no commissioner for boxing so the promoters do whatever the hell they like.
As long as suckers keep paying for ppv shows...
Funny how fighters always want to come down in weight, but never go up.
Like to hear Roberto Duran's opinion on that one. Among other great old time champs.
Patterson, Foster, Moore, Basilio, Robinson ect ect.

Let's get the name right, Rudee! It is ADONIS STEVENSON. And no, he wants no part of the Canadian Champ! A fight with Mayweather is pure hogwash. Perhaps a rematch against Jean Pascal (another Montreal - based former champ) might sell. Carl Froch and Lucien Bute were named as possible opponents. As for Andre Ward, sorry, fellas. Ward will retire the Alien in no time!

It does not happen often but I agree with Aqua on this one. Ward will send the old man to Florida via KO. Pascal,Froch and Bute will beat him up bad.

Well guys, I think the problem with Bonzo and I is,,,, we haven't seen Ward fight for
so long,,, we forgot how he looks.
Stevenson would ko Ward though... too big and hits way to hard for him.
Good stamina too.
Hopkins is the Ted Cruz of boxing.. BUT Hopkins wins!!!

Lots of things could get me out of the penthouse, Rudee! But I could not elaborate on a "family channel".

BTW, I like Stevenson. He is pretty scary with 22 wins and 19 KO's. BUT....and a big but!.....he would have his hands full with Andre Ward. He would be swinging for the fences, catching nothing. Ward would be stinging him like a bee and nail him with that straight right to the kisser. Stevenson is "raw" talent and at age 36, he has little time to learn finesse. He will not catch Ward as he often telegraphs his bombs.

Well put Aqua,, totally forgot about Stevenson's age.
He would have to nail Ward early.
I say lets do it soon! Come on Andre,,, do something!!!
Put it on in Canada... would make tons of dough!!!

Ward would Retire the Alien, No need for that to happen, just my 2 cents to enjoy more of the Old Man while We can!...
