Ahoy! It's Britney Spears, striking fear in the ears (if not the hearts) of Somali pirates!
This might sound like a belated, or early, April Fool's prank, but we kid you not.
According to an interview in England's The Mirror and The Sun newspaper with British Merchant Navy officer Rachel Owen, Spears' songs have been successfully used to repel Somali pirates. (This tactic, sadly, is not employed in the current hit Tom Hanks' movie, "Captain Philips," which chronicles a real-life Somali pirate hijacking).
Britney Spears "Piece of Me"
In a high-decibel effort to deter Somali pirates, who in 2011 attacked 176 ships off the horn of Africa, British Merchant Navy ships are blasting Spears' songs at the pirates. "Toxic" and "Baby One More Time" appear to be especially effective in prompting the would-be scavengers to abort their missions and flee on the high seas.
"Her songs were chosen by (our) security team because they thought the pirates would hate them most," Owens said. "These guys can’t stand Western culture or music, making Britney’s hits perfect."
Your turn!
What songs by Britney Spears, or any other performer, would you suggest be used to deter Somali pirates or other bad guys in general.

What about the crew members on the enormous tankers targeted by the Somalis? Are they subjected to the same, ear-numbing Britney blasts? Happily not, says Owens, who indicated that the external audio speakers on a ship can be pointed outward toward the would-be pirates.
