Microsoft has put things straight once and for ever in the Windows 7 retail sales craze, saying that it officially ended them last October.

The company communicated in an email sent to us today that “we are confirming that the retail software end of sales date for Windows 7 did happen on October 30, 2013,” and just like we reported yesterday, sales of PCs with Windows 7 preinstalled will continue until further notice.

While such a move is clearly supposed to push users towards its modern platform, not many will be pleased with it.

At this point, Windows 7 is the world's number one operating system, with a market share of more than 45 percent. Windows XP, which is now the runner-up, is far behind with only 31 percent.

And still, several retailers are still selling Windows 7 licenses online, probably because they're still in stock, but in just a few months the operating system might no longer be available for those who want to buy a new disc.

even worse is the upgrade for Windows 8 which has screwed up more computers with incompatibl drivers and no way to roll back on the update other than reformat and reinstall everything again

You just cant wait till they come out with Winblows 9, that one may work properly , eventualy, if history repeats itself. I miss DOS 5.0

drivers incompatibilities are the fault of whoever made the driver not testing and updating to support the new operating system, not Microsoft.

well in a sense it is driver manufacturers but at the same time if the drivers work with Win8 on the system they wer installed on and MS decides to update their bogus crap it is pretty hard to blame the hardware manufacturers for that

Yea,was forced to purchase a new laptop due to theft (had windoz7). New has winblows8 and also had to purchase new printer due to driver problems. This friggin new system sucks...will just all of the sudden go to some other page and have to go all around to get back to where I was...and of course lost what I was doing. Again this winblows8 sucks. Sorry I had to buy new laptop.

Appears that software peeps believe an X32 or X64 driver will work across different platforms which we are realizing they will not. I had problems will Win 8.1 even though I had all the necessary drivers for Win8.0......strange. However I don't believe it was a driver problem as much as it was a Win8.1 problem.

Don't no about others but my two updates were exactly that. I did not have a copy of Win8.1 to do a fresh load.

My guess is the new windows after win 8 will be geared to be used online like office . Will eliminate piracy to a point .

The Win 8 release PRO is exactly that; a cloud or yearly rental instead of purchasing a individual copy of software.

I personally use a thumb drive to store my valuables along with all personally info/ IRS/passwords (actually use a separate thumb drive for passwords, Roboform). Nothing connected to internet unless I need it. Pain in behind BUT it works.
