Firstly, for the moderators, if this thread should be somewhere more suitable, please move it as you see fit. Feel free to comment, or if something I wrote is not appropriate, please remove this, but hopefully don't ban me if it contains something I should not be posting. Just PM me after removing it saying what I did wrong.

I was just curious if anyone here bothers using proxy IPs or programs/services that allow you to change you IP address.

Most I am sure have found the little tricks of the trade to make things much more anonymous with P$, but what about IP addresses?

To date, I have not tried anything fancy like that. I didn't really know about this option until I first heard of people doing it for Netflix. eg where someone in CAN who rightfully believes they are getting screwed with a much more inferior CAN version of Netflix...as far are programming is concerned, uses a proxy to make there home IP look like that of a US one, enabling the much more superior US Netflix for them. I am assuming a tactic like this could be used for P$.

Thanks in advance.

I use a service called private internet access. It allows me to choose from probably 20 different servers in North America and internationally. It connects when I turn on my computer and is simple to use. It costs a small amount each month but definitely provides me added security. They also claim that information sent/received is encrypted

Your real ip is still easily uncovered. If you're using this service to cover you're ip for iks reasons, you may be tossing your money out the windoe.

What makes you think it does not work?

providers can see the name of the receiver in the router settings connected to the Private (NAT) and what IP your using.

I believe there are some sites/places where you can accomplish this for free too. I know amongst my friends, there are some that pay a small monthly fee ($5-8 bucks a month), and others that pay nothing. Again, they use this to get the US version of Netflix.

The only negative I have heard is that it can slow down your connection a bit depending on where the IP you use is located.

On the flipside, I don't even know if Canadian ISP providers can be requested to disclose customers personal details at this point in time...unlike in the US.

usually your IP location is about 20-30 miles radius from your actual location.
Your IP address is owned by your ISP, a VPN or Proxy can make you appear to be somewhere else, but that's it.

well I can see these programs (HideMyIP) changing a few settings on a computer to mask the IP someway but uless it is doing it at the router level it is not going to have any effect on other internet devices connecting through the same router

an http proxy is not safe as the proxy
other solutions like ssl vpns are more trustworthy
i use hola for chrome .. but just to avoid trackers

mod your router

exactly my point DU, unless the router settings get modded they would have no effect on anything else connecting via that router. I find those programs almost totally useless for any real anonymity
