Didn't know where to put this so it ended up here. I would like to get a STB for my cabin which is in a rural area with no cable or DSL Internet service. Is anyone using an Internet stick for IKS with good results and reliability?

Thanks

I am going to install a directional cell antenna on my existing OTA tower to maximize my signal. My cell phone provider will not give me a Internet stick to try without a contract so I want to ensure that it will work with IKS before I buy.

Does your current cell phone have internet included?

If so "tether" the internet out of your cell phone to your FTA box.

Doing it that way you won't need an additional contract with your cell provider! And you don't need a whole lot of bandwidth/signal you're only requesting 60 bytes every 20 secs!

Is it possible u could figure that out for a month of use.??

I actually was thinking about tethering my phone to my STB. The only issue is I need to use my external cell antenna to get a good signal and I know that the Internet stick has an external jack, and my cell phone doesn't. I know there are cell amplifiers available but I don't want to spend a few hundred dollars on that.

There are lots of used Internet sticks on Kijiji that don't require a contract. Does anyone here know if I can use the active SIM in my cell phone in an Internet stick?

Thanks

If verizion is available they have a prepaid hot spot that works, I use one in my motor home. I use an xfta router that connects to the wifi hotspot and have my limesat ultra connected to the xfta router

anonymous, the time you would use for this purpose directly relates to your cell plan! as long as your cell is active, so will the tethered internet out be active! my cell plan includes talk/text/inet/gps/nav all for one price. so long as I pay the cell bill the internet is active for no extra cost, and as i said above no serious bandwidth is required!

opensky, whereas the cell phone does not have a cat5 port out like an internet stick(something for which you will pay for every month) you CAN feed the tethered connection out of cell phone into USB port on computer/laptop and then bridge that connection out to STB!

So i can assume 2 gig of data a month would allow 24/7 connection with no extra cost?

anonymous, using 24hr/day 30days/month you need a max of 800kb (actually 777600"0" bytes) for your STB assuming it was on 24/7!

corrected math 60 bytes x 3 (60 bytes every 20 secs or 3 times a minute) = 180 bytes
180 x 60 (minutes in a hour) = 10800 bytes
10800 x 24 (hours in a day) = 259200 bytes
259200 x 30 (days in a month) = 7776000 bytes or 7,776 kb or 7.776 mb per month

That is using ICS - Internet Connection Sharing which should work. I researched this a while ago for a friend out in the boonies with a cell internet USB stick plugged directly into a PC. We never did it but the only doubt left was whether you needed a crossover CAT5 cable to the receiver or a regular one. There were differing opinions and results. You can find ICS how to in Windows help, Google and searching the forum. I suppose a cell phone in wifi hotspot mode will also work if your PC/laptop has wifi.

Another solution that works is a router for internet sticks. There's a slot to plug in the internet stick. It's just like a regular router with 4 CAT5 out ports and wifi is a plus for all your devices. I tried one once and it worked. No computer for ICS needed.

Thanks cmangle.. I will pass that information on to the guy that was asking..I also took the liberty of removing your e-mail address as it is not a good thing to post that in an open forum.

Still way under his 2 gig limit.. Thanks again.
