Just got my new low freq circular lnb (Royal RPL-K108). I'm trying to get dn 118 on a 20" pan but every time I scan the only channels I get are on 119. What gives - could it simply be the dish is too small for NE USA. I was told I might need at least a 30".

Here is an active footprint map for 118.8W, you can zoom into your location and click on it, this will give you an estimated dish size needed for good reception on that satellite.

Also that LNB will not pick up 118.8, as it is in a lower frequency band then what that LNB's is specked for, that LNB will work from 12.2 GHz to 12.7 GHz, you need an LNB that will work in the 11.2 to 12.2 GHz band and is a circular polarized LNB.

I think that the LNB has to be linear!

I was told that this is a dual LNB that would receive 118 & 119.

Specifications:
Polarization: Circular
Input Frequency: 11.70 - 12.75 GHz
LO Frequency: 10.750 GHz
Noise: 0.2 dB
Dual-output

From my location I get great signal strength from 110, 119 so should I assume the dish size for 118 would not be the issue?

Well the model number you posted "Royal RPL-K108" only covers the upper kU band for the dish satellites (12.2 to 12.7 GHz) did you get a different one then whats posted?

This is what I find for that model number.

http://royalplussupplies.com/rpl_LNB.html

All that's listed in it's spec's is reception in the upper kU band for Dish 119.

And 118 is a weaker satellite then 119, it's transponder's output's are about 1/2 the power levels of 119, so a bigger dish may be needed, did you go to the footprint map I posted and check your location?

I checked the footprint map and it says about 22" dish - same as for 119. If the bird is low power then maybe I need a 30". Unfortunately I don't have a larger dish to try it out.

The specs that I posted are directly from the LNB label. The link you gave for Royal is a different LNB - for some reason they don't show my model in their products.

set it at 10750 for both 118 and 119 to get all the channels

Yep, tried that but I only get the 119 channels. Thanks.

got to your sat settings and play with your ports and lnbf types until you find a combination that gives you a sat lock before you scan.

9750 for low and 10750 for high! Are you sure that you have a linear and circular LNB.
119 uses circular and must have linear LNB for 118.8

Yes a linear LNB but it must be one of the special circular polarized linear LNB's, you wont get much from just a linear LNB.

Sat 118 uses the lower kU band that most linear satellites are on (11.2 to 12.2 GHz) but uses the circular polarization like the high band Dish and BEV satellites.

Well, I have tried everything I can think of with the settings etc but still no 118 channels. Sure wish I had a bigger dish to try.

I am testing this with a Dreamlink T4, no switches just the one lnb.

well the Royal RPL-K108 LNBF is for 118 so you need to fine tune your existing 20" pan or get a larger 30".

I GOT IT!!
Wow, do I feel stupid. You have to understand that it is very cold here and I was outside working fast with freezing fingers. Can you believe I was on the wrong bird - I was aimed at 110. I moved it over to 119 and BINGO, 118 is coming in with good signal strength.
I can't thank you guys enough for helping me through this.
