GILROY (CBS SF) — A dog inside an SUV that was stolen in Gilroy was found dead when the vehicle was discovered days later in San Jose with the dog still inside, according to police.
Michael McVey said his Nissan Pathfinder stolen from a Walmart parking lot in Gilroy on February 23 with his 15-year-old female Akita, Keiko, in the back seat.
Four days later, the San Jose Police Dept. called McVey and told him his SUV was found abandoned at another Walmart in San Jose – but the dog he raised since it was a puppy was found dead in the back seat.
Police said Keiko appeared to have been left in the vehicle the whole time. “It’s a pretty sick and cruel thing that they did to her,” said McVey.
Gilroy police are looking for two suspects captured on security camera. McVey said he could not care less about his vehicle and the thieves could have easily just let Keiko out. “They could’ve at least had a heart and let her out so she could run to me.”
“That dog and I were best friends, we went everywhere together,” said McVey. “She was amazing, just a sweet, gentle dog. She’d never hurt anybody otherwise these guys would have never gotten away with it.”
