I have a Gateway from AT&T but sometimes the signal is weak how do I make it strong?
Do I have to buy a repeater or a range extender?

Some routers/gateways have external antennas, you can replace the stock antenna with one that has a higher gain.
If the antenna is not removable you could just add a second router with a higher output, amped wireless has some that go up to 1 watt with removable antennas.
Or a WIFI range extender can be used, one like this.

log in to your gateway modem. most of the 2wire gateways have a setting for signal strength that can be set from 1 to 10

Just get a wifi extender. Boosts signal

I switched over to the "Amped Wireless" routers, they have a higher RF output then most, and the antennas can be replaced with bigger better ones, you can also use a corner reflector type antenna and put all the signal in one direction.
This way if the WIFI router/gateway is in one end of the house the signals will be directed to the far end, thus better coverage is obtained.
But some WIFI extenders are cheaper if you only need one locations signal boosted.
I use the amped wireless R1000, I have one antenna stock for inside the house, and one antenna replaced with 35 feet of RG-214 coax going outside to to a 2 watt WIFI bi-directional signal amp*, then split into two Yagi antennas, this covers the farm at 1 mile in each direction.
*Bi-directional amp, amplifies out going and incoming WIFI signals.

I don't work anymore, all I get is a pitiful little check from SSI.
I had rolls of the stuff lying around, it's has some good performance at 2.5 GHz.
